I need a new pillar drill, but with a deep throat !!!

    Ooo errrr Missus !!

But I really do. I need to drill several items with holes that are 15cm from the edge, so the "throat" on the pillar drill needs to cope with that. Cant do it by hand as its for turntable platters, so the holes need to be accurately placed and perfectcly vertical.

Any suggestions for mfrs whose drills can cope ?
    Ta

Not entirely answering the question, but the mini desktop milling machine that I've been looking at has a throat of 170mm

Big stuff is gonna cost, innit.
I'd always used Axminster as a starting point, but maybe an older model from eBay?

Id' make a template drill holder personally.

I have a pillar drill but it's not as useful as I hoped.

With a good hand drill, guided by a device of your cunning crafting, you might just get what you want

Re: I need a new pillar drill, but with a deep throat !!!

Can only see Zak's drill adaptor thing working if it sits wholly on top of the piece to be drilled. Guess with some soft material at the bottom and careful clamping it could work.

But compared to good pillar drill with a nice arm, with that jig is like a router: needs a fair bit of pressure and a depth stop which doesn't seem very accurate either.

You can't get an accurate hole with the Zak bodge, there'll be loads of wobble. Source: got one similar

There are thousands of bench drills, pillar drills and drill presses on the 'Bay, at all sorts of prices... so it's really a case of trawling through and finding one with a sufficiently deep throat for you to drill.
I still think a second-hand ex-workshop one, of a reputable old brand like Startrite, Record Power or Meddings will likely be cheaper and yields best results. That's generally the case with woodworking and similar machinery.

Used Meddings, Fobco, Rexon, Startrite tend to get the best comments. Or see what the reviews on mid range Axminsters are like. I looked at getting something bigger than my hobby bench drill a while ago, lots of very negative comments about the cheaper models on engineering forums, the advice I got was go for a second hand professional drill that you can have a look at. Have you got an hobby engineering group near you? My local one has some excellent and helpful engineers, they specialise in miniature ride on trains. When I look for stuff like this one ebay I search local and used. Just watchout for 3 phase!
    .
We have an Axminster trade pillar drill at work, seems to be pretty good. Think its this one and looks big enough (just) 165mm throat.
