    Wheel of Time

    Anyone looking forward to this?

Love the book series although it can be a bit dated in places.
Early reviews seem mixed but hopefully they are things that can be improved as the series goes on.
I'm surprised that the sets are coming in for some stick in the early reviews as the reported budget is huge.

I'm looking forward to it. Thrones especially the first 3 seasons was outstanding. The Witcher did very well although it was a bit too shiny in places and the changing of time lines wasn't done as well as it could have been Henry Cavil absolute nailed Geralt.

I wonder where WOT will fall. I'm expecting more than a few changes to the sources but these books have a huge fan base. Get too much wrong and the viewing numbers could drop sharply. The productions team/writers etc must feel under huge pressure.

    Can't wait for Friday

What channel? The Mrs is a big fan of these. I've not read them. Is this the mega series where guy died without finishing the series so sometime else stepped in? Not sure I want to invest enough time in reading them just to have a ghost writer step in for the finale

Amazon Prime. I've seen ads for it when watching other videos. Might give it a go.

    Re: Wheel of Time

I never quite finished the wheel of time books. Always got to book 7 and get board as nothing happens for a long while!

Was really looking forward to this series as a result however but I've heard its over violent and has few light hearted moments. The books sometimes silly side was something I enjoyed (never been one for GOT style violence either). Not sure what to do really as I was going to watch with the wife but she's even less interested in violence than I am. Why do so many of these book to TV series have to mess with the source material so much? It one thing to drop some characters/sub plots to pace for TV/film but to change tone etc is just rubbish. It sounds like they've just tried to copy GOT to much.

    Re: Wheel of Time

I was the same, book 3 was brilliant though and it had nothing to do with the main character.

In the end it was the ridiculousness of it all that finished it for me - somewhere around book 6 or 7 the main character (Rand AlThor?) is in a loving relationship with 3 women that all agreed to share him. I mean i can get Magic, Dragons, Demons, and so on and so forth, but theres a limit to my suspension of disbelief.

Otherwise a lot of it resembles Terry Goodkinds series, magic users controlled with collars, pushed into slavery etc.

Brandon Sanderson finished the books after Robert Jordan died, Sanderson is a prolific writer in his own right and some of his work is excellent. Its also mostly interconnected but in a very vague and distant way. He also takes years to finish a book but tends to write another 3 while he is working on it.

wonder if he'll finish Game of Thrones for George Martin

    Re: Wheel of Time

Watched the first episode over the weekend. Was ok - felt a little over the top violence wise but wasn't gratuitous like I feared. Still wish they didn't fiddle quite so much with the story (It feel like switch to adults was to purely to allow sex scenes - Its adds nothing else.) Will watch the rest as and when I can - I'm a celeb is back so TV is prebooked by the wife most nights for the next month!

    Re: Wheel of Time

It's the "fiddling with the story" aspect that ruins this kind of thing for me. Normally.

I read the books. Well, up to about 12 or 13 9 (can't remember) but got bored with it going on, and on, and onnnn, aaaaand onnnnn. You get the idea.

Hadn't been aware there was a TV version. Might give it a try. Might not. It depends if there's something better on .... like the 38th re-run of Midsommer Murders.

    Okay, I'm kidding.

I think it was more than 38.

    Re: Wheel of Time

I really loved these books and was extremely excited when I heard they would be televised. I think it is too early to decide whether it is good or bad. What I can say is that I have found the changes so far to be poor and the pacing is off at times (it is hard to cram so much into a show, but that's why writers are paid).

It has the potential to be amazing (especially if it makes it until the end of the story). I just don't know if this season is going to be enough to ensure it gets the audience required for that to happen.

    Re: Wheel of Time

Never read them, watched the first three episodes. Thought it's ok so far. My wife has had to do a bit of filling in on a few bits like who the white clad folk are supposed to be etc. It seems they are juggling bits of timeline in terms of when we encounter people or find out about certain things but nothing too extraneous so far. Spent most of the first couple of episodes chuckling at the similarity of some scenes to LOTR and Narnia Chronicles etc. It's a good thing we're not watching it with anyone else. It'd be like watching it with Stadtler and Waldorf.

In terms of watching the TV series, or a Hollywood blockbuster for that matter, not having read the books is an advantage, IMHO. It gives less chance to draw invidious, or even merely unflattering, comparisons

    Re: Wheel of Time

Watched the first 3 episodes and tbh, so far, compared to the books or other shows of this genre it's complete garbage imho. The acting is pretty poor across the board, the dialogue is woeful and the sets or the way it's been filmed even look crap. It looks like B movie fantasy film from the 80's. So disappointed, I'll keep watching to see if it improves but I'm not holding out much hope.

Some of the places look really familiar. e.g in the first episode, I was reminded me of the quarry in stranger things and waterfall scenes from Z for Zachariah.

Dialogue isn't horrendous but then I'm benchmarking it against "oh mr Frodo..." and "and my axe" etc from LOTR as I've no concept of the book's original dialogue, though Mrs ik9000 does say it's not great in the books to begin with. I wouldn't have said it looks B movie. I would say it is confusing as heck so far and will hopefully get a better clearer as things go on. So long as it doesn't have the childish ending of say, Picard, then I will stick with it for now.

    Re: Wheel of Time

The dialog in the book isn't great to be honest but given the changes to the story that have been made no reason they couldn't have improved on it? The books are an acquired read to be honest. First few books move quite fast but later book just feel like filler. One day I'll get past book 7 and get to the ones Sanderson wrote after Robert Jordan died. They are supposed to be the best in the series. I think the books shine from a world building/lore point of view which is why they are so popular. They have so many subplots and diversions though...

I've still only watched first episode as Hawkeye/only connect/bake off (And I'm a celeb for the wife) have taken priority.
