Someone explain betting for me! Grand National

Can some explain what betting "each way" means?

I assume "each way" receives a quarter of the odds from a straight win. But what does fist 4 mean?

Any extra info greatly welcomed.

Each way means you bet £5 to for a horse t WIN and you get ALL the odds....BUT another £5 for it to get 2nd OR 3rd OR 4th...but you only get 1/4 the odds.

The more horses are in the race the further back that goes....but the lower the odds go.

IF your horse WINS you get the odds on the 1st place at FULL ODDS....AD you also get the 1/4 odds on the other fiver.

So...if you bet on a 10/1 with £5 each way.

If it won you'd get £5 x10 = £50 plus your fivers back
AND £5x10 divided by 4(a quarter the odds) = £12.50 plus your fiver

so in total you'd hand over £10 and get back £62.50 winning and your 10 bet.

IF it came in 2nd or 3rd or 4th you'd loseyour first fiver.

and get your second fiver at 1/4 of 10/1
So £10 outgoing....

lose first fiver.

second fiver would win you back 10/1 x £5 divided by 4 so £12.50 plud your fiver back so you'd still be quids in.

HOWEVER watch the odds...lower odds aint worth Each Waying on.....2/1 or an evens horse....only just covers itself let alone the other half you lost.

I didthat quickly so you could read it but here's a tad more for you.

The LESS horses are in the race, the lower the each way coverage is...

so a small race of maybe 6 horse, EACH WAY would only cover the first 2. BUT the divider would be less aggresive..

so you'd put a £5 on each way, and get 1/2 the odds if it came in 2nd.

If there were more horses it might be first 3 places...and you'd get a third the odds.

Also, it has to be said, only EACH WAY a horse if the odds are HUGE....

a 33/1 or 66/1 outsider IS worth EachWaying....1/4 of 66/1 is worth anyones dough

BUT it could be said....COULD....not by me ...that you shuld be putting ALL £10 on the WINNER not half the dough on an also ran

Wow I was gonna post a thread asking just how horse racing betting worked....

You can also bet just on the place if you like, so in Zak's example you could just put the fiver on the place and get £12.50 winnings plus your fiver stake back. In that situation it would make no difference whether the horse came in first or fourth.

This year I have a fiver on Colnel Rayburn to win and £2.50 on the place (at 16-1)- that way I'm in the money if he wins but I'm still a little ahead if he gets pipped at the post or whatever.
