    Gaming and Sports

Hi, this is a bit of a sad story so far, but I'd like to run something past you guys and get your input just to get a reality check for myself.

Before a radio show today about Time Magazine's 100 most influential people, it came up that the Halo Trinity were included. I wondered about their presence in the list, and somehow or other my friend and I started discussing about the comparative influences of the gaming world and the sporting world. It was my intial feeling that whilst the gaming world is becoming very influential that it did not yet compare with the influence of the sporting world in full. Somehow my friend didn't want to let it drop and has got very upset. He argues that the two are at least equal if the gaming world is not more influential. I said that whilst the gaming industry may well take over, it's only common sense that the massive and global sporting industry is older and bigger and more inlfuential. Since you guys are friends and on the technological side of things. What do you think? I'd really like your opinions. Thanks.

I'm just hoping he can let this drop, but apparently he's really worried about this and a couple of other discussions we've had, since they show I have no power of logic and some crazy opinions.

    Halo trinity?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

At this point in time, I feel that the sports world is easily far more influencial. You constantly hear and see them on television, and read about them in the newspaper - they have an entire section called "Sports", so it must be pretty important!

Computer games, on the other hand, are still less publicised in the media. If a famous sportsperson, like David Beckham, decided to get a divorce, I'm sure lots of people would care, have an opinion, talk about it, it would be publicised heavily in the media, etc.

Compare that to the gaming industry, and I think Yamangman said it best with:

I'll say "Halo Trinity?" only to question what they were doing in the list in the first place!

You want influential game designers I give you Peter Molyneux, Jeff Minter, Mike Montgomery, Jon Hare, John McCarmack and the Collyer brothers...

    THAT'S an influential gaming list...

btw, I thought Bungie Software came up with Halo?

Bungie came up with greats like Halo and Oni, which was also pretty rocking. M$ liked the look of the game, so bought out the company and changed all the releases.

    Erm...

    Oh dear.

Miyamoto is the uber-genius who gave us Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and all that goes with it. He is the main man behind Mario Bros, Mario Bros III, Mario World, Mario Kart, Zelda: Adventures of Link, Zelda: Wind Waker, and many more.

Few games designers can stand on a par with him.

Matthew Smith and the Oliver Twins are less well known, but Matthew was the genius who gave us Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy and the likes. The Oliver Twins are best remembered for Dizzy.

ZX Spectrum era these games may be, but Manic Miner is still (*still*) one of the best platformers ever.

Its up there with Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario Kart (SNES), Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Mario World, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda: Adventures of Link and Command and Conquer, as one of the true greatest games of all time.

I think it's pretty obvious that the sporting world is more influential as it's covered a lot by the press and has a large ammount of coverage on TV. Whereas gaming has very little of this outside of the internet and specialist magazines.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
