    Question Music Downloads

New White Stripes single, awesome, want it! But it's only currently available via download Now I've never bothered with music downlods before as I really prefer CD's. So what I'd like to know, what services are best & give good vfm.

    Cheers chaps & chapettes.

Don't like the white stripes tbh but then I'm not really they're target audience either, as for music downloads napster is the only service I used and then only because it was a free trial, decent quality, good download speeds but in a very limited filetype unfortunatly

you've got 2 options....iTunes music store, 79p per track or £7.99 for complete album, fast downloads, however if you want to listen to it on the go, you're limited to an iPod. The other option is through Windows Media Player, where you can purchase from MSN music, napster store and several others. The bonus on WMP is a lot of them offer subscription services if you're likely to use it often. This is an advantage if you have a creative or non-iPod media player that supports windows media format. Both programs allow you to burn the music to CD and come with Album art if you have a colour printer. The choice is yours

Well, thats the 3rd option! haha. Not worth it at all now, theyre really cracking down on it! Better quality and less chance of the music industry slapping your wrists if you pay for it

all big-label download services will provide you with DRM'd files.

make sure you know what you're buying - e.g. WMA tracks you get from an online store can be disabled without warning (i.e. become unplayable) if the record label and store have a disagreement, or even if microsoft deem your system to have done something naughty.

READ the licenses for these stores. you are _NOT_ buying music, you are leasing it. you have a license to the music, you don't own it.

wait for the CD, 0iD. assuming it comes out on real CD format, which might be wishful thinking

I purchased music from iTunes, then tranferred all of the m4p (protected) files accross to another machine. When I loaded up iTunes on the other machine, it asked me for the username and password I originally used to purchase the files, and they worked fine. I think you're right when you say that WMAs are unplayable if you transfer them, so I'd suggest if you do want to transfer the music files, use iTunes.

edith yeah, and just burn them as soon as you download the album, thatll save you hassle

you can only do it so many times before the files get locked down

hmm, I see your point. It's getting the tracks early vs slightly better quality. m4ps at 128k seem to be ok for me, but thats my opinion

    illegal

even if you're in russia, we're talking pretty tenuous legal loopholes.

plus their offices were raided in febuary by the police, who were pushing for prosecution (though overruled at a higher level by the usual corrupt officials)
