    StarTrek TNG Cheif O'Brien

    oh guys,

    geek question time

    Watching Startrek the next generation.

In some episodes O'briend hold the rank of Luitenant junior grade, then in later senior grade. Then he starts being called "Chief" which from what I understand is a "non office" rank.

Whats the deal with him, he answers to data/la forge who are LTD cmder and later worf as senior grade lt.

O'Brien talk about resigning his commision in some episodes after fighting with cardisia

when he moves to DS9 he still holds the rank of cheif - yet this time it seems a senior rank.

so whats the deal with him.
    It is Inevitable.....

I believe his rank to be Chief Petty Officer, which is a non-commissioned rank.. also on DS9, he's the Chief Engineer, so it makes sense to be called "Chief"

he's also part of the original team so I guess he's friends with them, so there's that element of respect between them I guess which allows for more friendly terms...?
