Off To The USA next week... advice

Hi guys, I fly to Boston next Wednesday and have a return flight from Atlanta 3 weeks later, I need to cover 1200 miles, just wondering about cheap insurance cover and if anyone has any recommendations, also does anyone know if can use my normal HSBC bank card to take cash out? Also if I picked up a mini ipod out there will it be much cheaper?

Any info is more than welcome

yes - you can use switch cards to take cash out (no so sure about solo) - I travelled around using switch for a couple of months without a problem. Never take cash out of a machine with Visa tho! Fees will be pretty high, but not really that bad in the grander scheme of things. For travel insurance - i use norwich union as they were unrestricted time out of the country, and a year cost me £50 - covered cameras, cellphone, ipod etc under travel insurance too. I'd assume the mini would be a little cheaper out there - but I think you'll have warranty problems when you get back.

I used STA travel when i went off round the world, they were pretty reasonable. I was in Boston a little while back so if you would like some tips about where to go, what to see etc feel free to send me a PM.

There's a good article here about getting cash out abroad.

I can only agree with the article - Nationwide offer by far the best deal when it comes to taking out money abroad.

I recently visited Canada and I looked around for the best rate before I went. The best I could find was £1:$2.20 at Marks & Spencer. When I took out money from the ATMs in Canada, I got between £1:$2.35 and £1:$2.38. More convenient and a better rate! HSBC will probably over-charge you like hell though.

And yes, iPod prices are cheaper over there. Don't forget that you can usually claim the tax back too.

I used Atlas when I travelled. There's quite a few travel insurance price comparison tools about on the web if you're willing to Google them.

i'd reccomend taking cash over with you, and then using a proper bereux de change to change more. or take travellers cheques if you feel unsafe..

ipods are a bit cheaper out there - i cant remember prices, but you will have to get a new psu and the warentee is invalid (which you need for batteries) so its probably not worth the hassle.

It can be, and besides, if you do it that way you wont need to convert loads, just what you need, it saves in the long run as you wont lose out massively if you dont spend all your dollars...

AFAIK the iPod warranty is still good for this country, owing to it being a "portable" product. The same applies to Powerbboks/iBooks. I think this is the case, but don't quote me on it.

On entering the country they are now taking your left and right index fingerprints and your mugshot - I found out when I arrived here (San Francisco) on Monday!

After a 12-hour flight I'm sure everyone looks fantastic in those photos
