I learnt how to touch type by constantly typing in forums like this :)
There is no better way imho.

tbh mate you dont need to be a perfect touch typist at uni. It'll come with practise, as long as you are ok at it, then it doesnt really matter.
-
Can type fast, but only when looking at the keyboard every few letters.
I'd like to be able to touch type though...
-
Self taught - but about 16 years using computer keyboards helped somewhat.
-
i'm sure there's been a thread about this before...something to do with being able to type not looking at the keys using a 'hunt and peck' ie nearest finger to the key, and real touch typing which uses particular fingers for each key.
i go for hunt'n'peck :D

I have basically learnt to touch type by writing alot.
Having a game like Soldier of Fortune 2 really helps when you have to type quickly.
-
I can touch type, I just picked it up from typing a lot. I'm pretty accurate (well, I haven't made a mistake yet in this post!), but I'm not that fast. If you use computers enough, then you'll probably pick it up.
-
Learnt myself completely. I typed this post without looking at my keyboard.
-
Im not to bad at typing still need to look down every now and then. Just comes with practice really, had a few lessons in my first year at secondary school but thats it.
-
On a couple of occasions I've done the first hour of a touch typing course and done fine. I really CBA to see it through to completion though, I can do an accurate 60wpm using two fingers on each hand, and I don't really see the benefit of not looking at the keyboard when you type. My only real problem is that I'm totally incapable of hitting the apostrophe key instead of the semi-colon key so I have to go back through everything I type changing don;ts to don'ts etc..

If you learn to touch-type really properly, you're setting yourself up for RSI!
IMO you're better off building up your speed by normal use, and keeping a few bad habits so your hands don't stay in the same place all the time.
-
self taught tbh :) rarely look at the kb when using my kb at home, more difficult with laptop keyboards tho ;/
-
I put self-taught, but I still wouldn't call myself a full typist. I can type without looking at the keyboard (infact I typed this sentence up to the bracket without making a mistake), but as shown there, I do make mistakes. I have found that recently my typing ability as gone it LOADS from being on IRC etc.
Note - I typed all this post (except the 1st sentence) without looking and only made 2 mistakes - not including this note where I made 7 plus mistakes!!!!
