Do you HAVE to have travel insurance for USA?

I fly on Wednesday and don’t have any medical insurance sorted as the company I was gonna go through called me to say they had made a mistake in the what they said presuming the ‘joint’ cover I asked about was for a couple, when I need it for myself and a friend.

Looking pretty tough to sort something out in time for departure which is first thing Wednesday

Thats a big fat YES!! Go online, you'll get a PDF to print out and take with you. It'll take a couple of minutes

I've heard that the ambulances over there leave you by th eside of the road if you don't have medical cover....

    Make your own decision.

Will an E111 be OK for the USA? I've been fine with one of those for France and Spain before.

nope. e111 covers you in europe (hence the e. maybe) - no healthcare is free in the states - hence why the sue culture is so big (as in, if you slip and break your arm in a shop, you *need* 4 grand just to pay for a quack). when i went i didnt have any.. i kinda forgot.

sainsburies is very cheap and pretty good. otherwise try hsbc or endsleigh (apparently). a travel agent will normally be relatively expensive

Last time I got travel insurance it was cheaper to get anually cover than it was for a 2 week holiday.

It cost roughly £35 a year. Am trying to find who it was with. I'll let you know when I do. It only took a few minutes to set up.

I don't tend to bother with it. There's insurance for everything these days and frankly it strikes me as a 'cheap' attempt to make money with every excuse imaginable.
