Who has the Sun Java RE installed?

Well, do you? If not why not?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

Yes... And not just the JRE but the SDK too... Latest version and a couple of older ones because of various projects I've been working on (at work). Just the latest version installed at home (but still the SDK not just the JRE).

winxp does not come with a java runtime environment.

98->2000 come with the microsoft runtime environment, which is a custom (and not entirely compatible) java 1.1, with extra windows-only extensions. when xp was released, it was an optional download on windows update, and included in xp sp1 (for about a month, before it was replaced with sp1a, the javaless version)

microsoft's vm is poor, don't use it.
