    Questions about Microsoft Exams (70-270)

I have my Microsoft 70-270 (Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows® XP Professional ) Exam on the 2nd June, and i know some of you have sat these type of exams before! (Seem to think it was Jiff who done one!)

I was just wondering what you guys done to pass? Obviously revise, but what is the best method? I have the book about the exam published by Microsoft on the way to me, and i also have the Q&A Sheet on the exam. Any other info would be a great help

    Cheers,

    Craig

You've got me thinking about doing these Microsoft courses again now. I was thinking about doing the 4 MCP's for MCSA Server 2003 qualification with the possibility of adding another 3 MCP's later on to become MCSE Server 2003 qualified. My path would probably be 290, 291, 270 and 086, then later doing 293, 294 and 297.

Thing is, how have you studied, or have you just booked the exam and then going to study for that date? Have you done, or will you do, any classroom courses, as they seem to be a bit too expensive for me! I could get a book and self teach myself most of it I think, but not sure which books to get. I could get a book for each module (for example this one), but then there's a pack of 4 books for the 4 core MCSE modules, which include the 2 core MCSA modules. They're pretty expensive too, though I realise I have to pay out to learn things these days!

I don't mean to hijack your thread away from the original question, but it's all relative and saves making a new thread.

How long have you spent preparing for the MCP exam?

Plenty of online teaching resources although not always free.
    http://www.transcender.com/
    http://www.learnkey.com/elearning/Microsoft_Training/
    http://www.cbtnuggets.com/

Not done it myself but friend of mine has done them all and his advice is: Just make sure you put enough time in to preparing, especially for the scenarios they throw at you.

Read the book - Then read it again alot of information to take in (depending on your existing knowledge of course)

Knock out as many prac exams as possible.

    Good luck!

Format and reinstall several times and play with the admin settings

That way you'll get to learn it all first hand as opposed to via flash and screen-shots.

    ^ or that he he.

But make sure you actually know what to click on and where. No good having to click on 4 icons before finding the right one.

I got a collection of MCSE and CCNA books sitting on me shelf(got all 7 for £25. Isnt amazon great!).....I intend to go through some of them this summer and knock out an exam or 2. Would be nice to graduate next year with a BSc and a few certs under my belt.

nice one - how different did you find it to real world scenarios ?
like you, I've been working for a few years in the industry and figured its about time I did a few exams - I'm wondering how much unlearning I'll have to do in order to get things right the Microsoft way ?

About 10% is actually what you would do in the real world, the rest of it is what Microsoft would have done in that situation, some of the questions are comical Get the book on then and do a few practice tests (what i done) and its alot easier! Oh, and the test centre had free biscuits, cookies, tea + coffee, and juice which i went through quite swiftly

I've got some vouchers for a test in the first week of the holidays. I'm going to take the XP one. I semi see it as a rather useless qualification that people think is good.... then I can call myself a 'Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician'!

    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcdst/default.asp

    --------

How much will I just be able to do and what is the sort of pass mark as it were?

Is it neccesary to do revision?

What format is the exam in?

Do I need the books? If so which ones; links please?

    (my old post: http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.p...ighlight=MCDST)

    --------------

I know those online M$ free test things are very different but the answers they give to be selected are totally different to what the problem/scenario really is. Should I just give the answer that I know they want me to say (e.g. the Microsoft end user problem -and forget about hardware based probs.-)?

Also in those free ones they asked you to put in order where you would go to solve something. I can't recite the word on every button.... I just know where to go by sight (and in reality it's sometimes a deeper problem which one might need to experiment with). Hence my q. what format is the exam in?

    Thanks
