i can understand you not wanting to talk to him face to face about it, but i think that's got to be the best way, get all 3 of you to sit down and explain how you feel to him, i'm afraid there's not much you can do if he takes it personally but at least he'll know the score, and then it's in his hands as to whether he will move out willingly or will try and stay.

This is such a pain... well, I'm going to try and secure his replacement soon... and talk to him with my flatmate possibly tomorrow.

i know this is a fairly shallow way to look at it but surely if it is 2 vs 1 then he'd be very stupid to try and stand his ground. If he does so, you 2 move out and he faces paying 3 x as much until he can find another 2 flatmates....

i agree with some of the previous posts, a letter is way too much of a cop out, difficult tho it will undoubtedly be, you at least owe him a face to face discussion

you may find he has all manner of bottled up resentments etc about you two also,

eg he may feel you're being unreasonable hogging the phone line when he's specifically taken a few hours flexi to come home & get some porn on the go! - an extreme example i know, but he's over 18 & if thats his thing then he's perfectly entitled to it so be prepared to take a bit of flak yourselves & don't fly off the handle, keep your cool

as for leaving the house for an hour or so, i personally wouldn't do this myself if i'd just told someone to leave, obviously i don't know the bloke so can't possibly judge, but if he's that selfish or vindictive you're leaving yourself open to him robbing / breaking anything he sees fit while you're out. if u run a business via your PC, i'd hide it in case he sees fit to pour a cup of tea into it mate!

best of luck whatecver you do - its a rubbish situation to be in when you dislike the people you live with, hope you get it sorted
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is

I took him aside and explained the situation. He took it fairly well all things considered, however he wants some time to think about it. I imagine he's going to want to know thoroughly the reasons why we need to let him go.

Just come out with it and the both of you ask him if he'd be prepared to leave 'cos you are both unhappy at sharing the flat with him. Give him a month to find another place if necessary.

Put it as politely and simply as possible, DON'T go into detailed reasons and don't give examples of things he's done that you don't like. All these do is create openings for non-stop argument.

Don't bother with facts, - it's an emotions thing - in this case the two of you no longer want to share with him. Keep your reasons to emotions - unpleasant atmosphere, you feel uncomfortable, etc. etc.

Anyone can argue against opinions and facts but you can't argue against feelings, he can't say that you don't really feel such and such a way but he can argue against accusations or complaints.

Total and lasting incompatibility. Nice and simple. (Right!)

Thanks everyone for the advice! I'm so glad we didn't write a letter now!

I'll post back and tell you how it goes.

    Cheers,

Is it an idea to speak to him first and, if he won't be reasonable, both you and the other tennant complain to the letting agent?

allow him to leave with a bit of dignity...that way he won't feel TOO bad about it, and neither will you. not that you should.

You need too be subversive and gently coax him out, wait till he leaves his door open for a few mins and run in and sneak a kipper behind his radiator, or throw cress seeds everywhere and sprinkle some water and watch his lawn grow.

These arent probably the best ideas but I would love too see the fruits of ur labours in "housemates from hell" on itv sometime.
