    CCNA courses

Spoke to a chap today about doing their course, broken down into modules and working from home by yourself, with an assigned tutor a phone call away.

Sounded superb, but they wanted 2.5k for it :|

looking on google theres loads cheaper than that, but can anyone recommend one? not to fussed about the tutor side, but would like a reliable company, with a better value for money course.

    Any body Help?

A CCNA would be very valuable, ive just finished my 4th CCNA semester at uni, and its been a good course. Lots of work involved though, and the exams are very hard (i've not done the final, final one yet (just the mock), but trust me its not easy, its an adaptive exam that focuses in on your weak areas :S)

Try and find a university or college near you that has a CCNA/CCNP lab, they normally have decent enough tutors there and a decent lab - but check out the equipment they have available for you to use first, you dont want a load of crummy old 2501 routers and 1900 series switches to use, if thats all they have you will find the course much harder

I know that my uni (staffordshire) run CCNA courses outside of degrees, so i expect others do too?

I purchased 2x 2610's and a 400 fast hub a few months ago but I have still not learnt how to use them or set them up. I have a DVD with a full training program on it but I have just not started it yet.

I started this at college last year, I'm not a happy bunny cus the college is SO under-funded we have had no help so I'm really struggling, and not doing as much as I should ( which I know is really my fault etc etc ).

If I were you, buy the 2 books you need, buy the routers you need etc ( wont be more than 300 quid ) and learn it your self, the CCNA exam is only about 100-200 quid i think, total cost = 500 you don't need all the modules to take the end exam, that just gives you a discount for the end one.

you dont need any books...all the material you need (and more) is provided when you sign up to the course. Ofc its possible to do it without being enrolled on a course, but it would be MUCH harder. The actual cisco online reading/tests etc are very good, much better than any book i;ve seen. As a compliment to the online reading ofc its not a bad idea

As for buying your own equipment..well thats do-able, as I said you CAN do most of it with 2501's [£50 each], you need 3/4 and some 1900 series switches (about £50 each, need 2)

but some of the harder bits - mainly the VLAN setup for ccna4, cant be done with those as the 2501's cant cope with sub-interfaces, no matter what version of IOS you put on them.

So to get a fully functional lab your looking at 3x2621 routers (£250 ea) 2x2950 switches (£200 ea) and maybe having to buy a newer version of IOS to be able to use all the commands you learn in the ccna...not really worth doing if your serious about passing.

You *could* just use simulators but tbh they are cr@p compared to the real thing, no way would you pass the skills tests just by useing them. Sign up to a proper course, its the best way
