I checked their IRC channel this morning and it seems to be only a temporary problem but there's no ETA when it's back up

Gawd I had no idea, then again I had a feeling something like this would happen eventually. Personally I think with sites like btefnet it should've been kept IRC only like it was before and then they wouldn't have these kind of problems. It just got too big and too many idiots spreading the word .

This may seem a stupid question but why is the tracker still going?

    trackers were hosted elsewhere afaik

its stupid - you cant get the tv shows over here any other bloody way - it is copywrite breaking, granted - but if they were shown over here i'd watch tehm on fecking tv, if there were dvds out i'd buy the fecking dvds. what do they want us to do? move to the fecking states

at last some positive news I'm all for taking down bit torrent websites, its a horrible file transfer method and only encourages the spreading of piracy

Hitting at the source of BitTorrent downloads (principly the sites listing the trackers) is the best way to halt it, going after the users isnt the answer - the big downloaders wouldnt dream of using p2p anyway

No source = no downloads, simple

Actually i think you'll find BitTorrent was the most successful file transfer method across peers and that even Valve hired the guy who invented BitTorrent and implemented it into Steam. I'm all for BitTorrent, it does justice when it comes to legal downloads as you can get them downloaded faster and it doesn't rape single servers

    Its slow, slow, slow

same as all P2P, no guarenteed bandwidth - thats why I hate it

Steams a horrible program too, but thats a different issue

But even non-P2P file transfers are also no guaranteed bandwidth for the majority of them. Also, i think you'll find Steam has been the best invented game interface yet

Apparently the real reason why the site is down is because their web host got scared so they closed it down. Btefnet weren't directly targeted in the first place, besides their tracker is still active and they have a temp site running now.

    Pfft

    pfft

    pfft

Steam is horrible, a great concept but implemented badly. It is getting better, but its still incredibly buggy...This is a separate arguement though, not going to argue it here

Most none p2p file transfers have a much better guatentee on bandwidth - granted theres never 100% guarenteed bandwidth, but for example If i wanted to download a game demo and was offered either a bit torrent link or a privately owned FTP server running on a connection with 400kps upstream.

Bit torrent would start off at 1 or 2 kps and build up to about 30 or so..while the ftp server would serve at 220kps (on my current connection) constantly until its finished... bit of a difference.

Even if your lucky on BT your not realistically going to get maintained speeds like that off it...Same goes for usenet, plenty of legal stuff on there, my easynews account also lets me max out my connection constantly.

The bit torrent concept..well the P2P concept as a whole is conceptually flawed as it relies on multiple users - and therefore many more points of failure compared to a single FTP server or a usenet connection. (granted it also works in the reverse in that if one ftp server dies your screwed, while with p2p theres lots of clients to send data to you, but that doesnt make it faster )
