    ebay's search facility not as effective as it should be...

    I have been searching and searching for a spare part to a camera of mine but with no luck on ebay (the place where such oddities usually appear) I resigned myself to the fact that it would not emerge and have since gone to order the part new from a local shop (for local people). the part in question, as new, costs £40. ok, so its not going ot break the bank but for what its worth its a bit of a pain in the *rse. and today I notice a battery on a different camera has given up the ghost so I look on abay, once more, for said battery type - as I know you can get some great battery deals on ebay. I find it, great! and its for two as a 'buy it now' offer incl. postage...out of curiosity I check the seller's other items as it says 'camera direct brighton'. only to my shock do I see the part I've been searching for all this time sitting there for (at current bid) a fiver so I'm slightly agrivated as I know for a fact I typed in the name of the item as displayed in the title bar. I even checked by typing its name into the ebay item search bar and it came up as one of those auto-fill entries, indicating I had entered it on an earlier occasion.
    so, mr.ebay search engine...you're useless for foinding specific items. its not the first time its happened incidentally, been looking at various lenses but it still sucks when I've been looking for something and bought a part then to find it at last after the fact...

    oh and about getting a lens, found a really good one on offer with a 'buy it now' price and also £200 less to start a bid for the item. I knew that the buy it now price was fantastic and any bidding would push it way over budget. I mulled it over for not even a minute coming reasonably swiftly to the conclusion that its a blinder of a deal if I got it at teh offered non-bid price'...when I went back to the item some utter cretin had put a bid in! and within about 3hrs the price of the item shot past the 'buy it now' offer - a price I was prepared to pay as it was such a good deal, it finally went some £400-450 over the price I could have bought it straight away as.... i hate it when people don't think about the bids they make. clearly anyone with half a mind and knowledge of the product would have known that such an item
    also kicking myself for not acting faster I suppose.
    will have to scour the auctions a bit more I guess, but with the search engine being incredibly finiky about what it shows you god knows how I'm gong to get lucky....

    i think theres some odd system where items are only listed in the sellers shop, and dont appear in the general auction bit, or in searches, not 100% sure if thats accurate.

    Did you go into advanced search and check "Search title and description"?

    Also it's worth learning the search syntax, e.g. searching for:
    canon (50mm, "50 mm")

    ALWAYS remember to search for common misspellings, you can get some great bargains that way, because few other people see them.
    DFI LanParty UT NF4 SLI-D; AMD64 3500+ Winchester ;
    2x XFX 6600GT ; Corsair XMS3200XLPRO TWINX 1GB;
    Dell 2405FPW TFT.

    I thought that if you set a "Buy It Now" on eBay, the auction couldn't go higher that that? I.e. once it reaches the "But It Now" price it's sold?

    No, if it has a buy it now and a reserve the buy it now vanishes once the reserve (set lower than the BIN) is reached. Think if it doesnt have a reserve BIN vanishes with 1st bid

    no, if there's a 'bid now' and a 'buy it now' option as soon as someone puts in a bid the 'buy it now' option goes and the item is then bid for - otherwise I would ahve gone ahead and bought the thing!!

    well, if you know what you're looking for/at and the buy it now price is considerably lower than that of an other similar item currently in the auctions then you can make a very good informed descision...

    there's an extra option to search for items in ebay shops, right at the bottom after you've done a normal search.

    Alternatively you could search the shops area first then try the main auction area.

    I realised this a few months ago when i started making cards to sell and was looking for some cheaper supplies than the ones sold in the local art store.
