    Harlem Globetrotters, Manchester UK

    Hey guys,

I had a press pass for the harlem globetrotters game at the manchester evening news arena tonight, first time out with my 85mm F1.8 and first time shooting with such a huge huge crowd behind me (in fact first time shooting in a proper arena). Estimated gate of 10,000 people

here's the shots, AV mode iso1600 EOS-20D, getting around 1/700th most of the time

    [1]

    [2]

    [3]

    [4]

    [5]

    [6]

    [7]

There are about 25 more HERE

Had a lot of fun shooting this, hope I can do it again, sure beats dungeon gyms,

Opinions and thoughts would be nice

    Cheers

    Tom

    tom....

    i hate you...

great pics, I am very envious you got the opportunity to take those, I like the clarity of the lens very much...guessing its roughly a 100 on the 20D, ideal portrait length - and well executed. the 20D is quite capable of 1600 and very well saturated colours thanks to that lens. had a skim through the others you have there and particularly like this one:

just has the air of something about to happen but despite this there's someone already doing something and is in mid-flight!
    really like them.

cheers mate, was certainly an experience, the 85 is aprox a 135mm lens on the 20D, and is ideal for basketball in my opinion i bought it because i knew i was doing this, £300 inc lens hood it came to (£18 for a bloomin plastic lens hood!!). But it is extremely fast in both aperture and focus speed, and very sharp

    cheers

there are a few more in the actual gallery if you looked, but I was too worried about running out of card space of the actual game to take too many (once in a non-professional lifetime opportunity i couldnt afford to screw up )

    Cheers

Great shots thats some impressive ISO1600 performance no banding. Bokeh looks slightly odd on shot 1.

lol yea the bokeh does look a little strange, but I spose its because there were so many highlights in the crowd and they were completely completely out of focus, he was minimum focus distance from me, and them infinity

Urmm yea my favourite picture of the cheerleaders i meant

    Cheers

background blur seems ok to me...its because the players were under spotlights or at least lights directed onto the court as the crowd remained un reflective/dubdued light...
    i think it works.
