    What Guiter/Amp?

I'm thinking of learning the electric guitar (self taught) I already play the piano, saxophone etc. so I'm not a noob to music.

However I'm looking for a basic guitar and amp to start of with and haven't got a clue where to start...

i've been recommended to look at the Yamaha Pacifica range

I'm not looking to spend loads incase I don't stick with it, but at the same time don't want something cheap and nasty incase I do stick with it.

Please post recommendations (just looking really for a practice amp nothing too loud just for a standard 3mx3m room I'll probably use headphones quite a bit so that's important to me.

    Also where to buy online/shop?

Testing the guitar out prior to purchase isn't of great importance to me since I don't know what im looking for.

Most important questions are......what kinda music would you want to be playing? And what kinda budget are we talking?

You really do need to test a guitar. All axes are not created equal. Neck size & profile differ greatly so you need to find one you're comfortable with. No point in learning on a guitar that's a pig to get to grips with.

Until he starts to play though he's not really gonna know what kinda neck shapes, scale lengths, frets, bridges etc. And unfortunatly you can't learn to play with already owning the guitar, tis a vicious cycle.

I guess £250-300 for guitar and amp. it depends what itll buy.

Music wise I don't know bit of all sorts, i'd really like a nylon string guitar for some blues etc. but I think I'll have to lean for something conventional so I can do some rock/pop stuff.

As Knoxxy pointed out I am in a catch 22.

Got my guitar+amp from them, excellent prices, and great ppl. Went down to their store in lemington and spent the whole day there playing with various guitars and amps - right from the cheap squires and pacificas up to the top end starts/ibanez's (ignored the les pauls and the like cos they are fugly imho)

They helped me pick out the best guitar for my budget - showed off its potential sound for me too seeing as at that point I only knew a few basic chords.

So your best bet is to go down and have a play, as knoxy said you wont know what you want until you pick it up and play. I went there thinking of getting a squire fat strat, never even thinking of an ibanez, but when i actually got there and tried out a squire i didnt really like it, especially compared to the ibanez i now own (Ibanez SA160QM Transparent Grey)

Its got a double humbucker and 2 single coil pickups, and sounds great for both metal and punky stuff - havnt really played any blues on it but theres nothing to suggest it couldnt do it, seems like a great all round guitar to me.

Amp wise either a marshall 15wt DFX or the line6 equivalent depending on what you can afford (line6 has more FX and is more expensive)

I have the 30wt marshal and its very loud, with a great sound I think the 15wt marshal is about £80, so that would leave you with..£220 for the guitar - you can probably strike a deal with regent to get you a bit off the price aswell if your buying both an amp and guitar. Either that or they will normally throw in some strings/a tuner/a gig bag

Can't really reccomend a guitar as i dont know whether you prefer the les paul style or the strat/ibanez style, but look around the website (if you cant get to the shop) and see what style you like Anything by vintage would be a good starter les paul type guitar, they do good 'budget' guitars; squire do some nice strat copies for beginners, but I would say go ibanez as they have a better repuation - they do some £200 models iirc

regent also do some first time buyer deals

worth a look if you dont want to build a package yourself, the arias not a bad guitar

thats a good response, leam is only about 15mins away from me i looked at the site earlier didn't realise it was leam.

Regarding " les paul style or the strat/ibanez style" what do you mean by style? shape, sound, technical design?

My friend has an ibanez and recommends it, he shops in leam and recommended me to look at the Yamaha's. Amp wise i think I saw a 10w Marshall on there around £40

Regent guitars get the thumbs up from me aswell as the quality control they bring in is brilliant, drawing from my own experience as a learner I'd look at Ibanez's (especially if you have smaller hands) as they do tend to have slimmer necks, Vintage guitars are also well worth a look and have improved hugely recently. I wouldn't reccomend buying a 10watt marshall however, I had one and it was in all fairness shocking at any volume imo, I'd recommend looking into an amp with modelling technology, Vox make a nice 15watt version that has 11 amps built into it and half a dozen different effects, Line6 and Behringer also make similar amps that I think regent stock. I own a Line6 75watt Spider 2 myself and i've very pleased, have been through 5 amps before getting to this one and it impressed me no end.

I looked at that too, tbh I am really a function over form person so looks don't matter too much on this playing field. I kind of figured the Aria setup was 25% more than the Marshall kit so I guess the Aria kit is better ... think my best bet is to pay them a visit.

I'm aware that as usual you get what you pay for.

Yup, beware though, if you get into it buying guitars can become slightly addictive, I started out with a black tom delonge strat and I've currently got all this -

I've got a 300watt Bass Half stack aswell, ain't keeping that at home at the moment though.
