    My stupid, dumb friend...

I recently discovered that a friend of mine that is pumping iron at the gym, doing Kick-Boxing & running around the tracks trying to make the perfect body, is using Ephedrine every once in a while.

He offered me a pill so I could get "High" as he said & he guaranteed that it will act as energy booster, & enhance my athletic performance in water polo.

    I refused of course.

I've heard some wild stuff about Ephedrine & I really don't understand why he's using this stuff? He isn't a professional athlete, so he couldn’t be expecting to get any money from it, to justify risking his health by using that ****!

I guess he's just too stupid & dumb to realize what he is’s doing, or his ambition of having a great body & strength to show off at the beach this summer, is flooding his mind.

I know he’s been using this stuff for years now!

    That is sad.

Any way, this is what I found on the net:

Ephedrine is widely used for weight loss, as an energy booster, and to enhance athletic performance. These products often contain other stimulants, such as caffeine, which may have synergistic effects and increase the potential for adverse effects. Ephedra is often touted as the "herbal fen-phen

Ephedrine alkaloids are amphetamine-like compounds used in OTC and prescription drugs with potentially lethal stimulant effects on the central nervous system and heart. The FDA has received more than 800 reports of adverse effects associated with use of products containing ephedrine alkaloid since 1994. These serious adverse effects, include hypertension (elevated blood pressure), palpitations (rapid heart rate), neurophathy (nerve damage), myopathy (muscle injury), psychosis, stroke, memory loss, heart rate irregularities, insomnia, nervousness, tremors, seizures, heart attacks, and death. The agency has proposed to prohibit the marketing of dietary supplements containing 8 milligrams or more of ephedrine alkaloids per serving.

    hhmm..

    No thanks.

    I better warn my pal!

I've used stack before, and then stack 2 came out. It got banned because 1 in 3 people could get a stroke from it. It was just a natural stimulant and it worked. Not all of them are that dangerous but that one sounds along the same lines as the one i had

AFAIK it's just another stimulant. Caffiene can cause palpitations if you ingest enough of it. I would be worried if he was on steroids, but if he's been taking ephedrine for years without issue I can't see how it's suddenly going to start having adverse effects now.

Where the heck do you get that kind of stuff from though? It's not as it people stand on street corners dealing it, is it?

I would love to use something like that to help get fit, but obviously without the side effects listed, they're a bit worrying!

I was able to get it from my gym. In fact, they had steroids at my gym which were perfectly legal to sell. The laws may be different back at home compared to the UK though

Is it a legal substance though? I would understand why such drugs are banned for competitive use, but other than the slightly worrying list of side effects (which most medicines seem to list anyway) is there anything wrong with taking it for personal benefit?

Does it really work though? Would it help you lose weight and 'enhance your athletic performance'?

Yes it's legal to buy and take AFAIK, but it's banned from competitive sports because taking stimulants gives you an advantage. Quite a few athletes have received bans or suspensions as a result of taking cold remedies which contain it.

As for the effects, it's a stimulant that's similar to amphetamine, so it increases your state of alertness and amount of energy. In an exercise sense it makes you feel less tired, so you can train harder/longer before you get knackered. If you take too much, you could potentially push yourself hard enough to injure yourself; in extreme cases you can overexercise yourself to death, this is basically what happened to Tom Simpson in the '67 Tour De France (although there were other contributory factors). Amphetamine also acts as a hunger suppresant; I assume this does too since diet pills are referenced in the text above.

Personally I wouldn't bother with stimulants because when I'm really doing hard aerobic exercise part of the experience for me is to try and push my mental limits. I like the endorphine rush. However I have taken creatine in the past when going to the gym; this has a similar effect when you're doing weight training/anaerobic work allowing you to work harder and do more reps; it does it by releasing extra fuel into your muscles though, it's not a stimulant.

If you're just starting out Allen, taking stimulants would be a bad idea. It's very easy to push yourself hard enough to get aches and pains without any help whatsoever. The people who will benefit from it are people who are already fit and need to push themselves hard to get to the next level.

Note that I'm not recommending stimulants here, I wouldn't take them myself, but with reference to the original post it's not like the guy is likely to be doing himself any real damage.

you might find this an interesting read.

like rave said if he's been on it for a while, its not likely to suddenly change, but then you never know as there is a reason it is not licensed for this use. also it can cause dependance apparently.

the british national formulary only states mild systemic side effects like increased heart rate, restlessness, insomnia and rashes. the high heart rate is only really worrying if its already a problem for him.

all you can do is explain your concerns to him, but remember it's his choice.

I used them just so i could lift more, plus it was peer pressure by other lifters who said i should at least try them. Obviously i'm off everything but i used to take stack II, that white powder that begins with a c (not cocaine ), and just general load of protein

I have recently started a course of Ephedrine, am having no problems (am not overdoing it though). I have found for me personally it has helped. I have been weight liffiting/body building for a number of years and this is the first time i have tried it.

I know the risks and if i start to see any side effects i will be stopping.
