    website building...

just wondering how I might rename the address of my website yet have it still hosted by my broadband provider e.g. within the virgin freespace I have how can I get it to have my name as the address without any of that "www.freespace.virgin.net/etc.etc/" stuff?

http://www.dot.tk/ might be what you need. But ive never used them so it might not be. I think you register yourdomain.tk and then that url is redirected to your website. But im not 100% on it.

You can mask the redirecting address providing your domain registrar allows it (I know namecheap.com does). However that only hides the actual address, someone wanted to access say "about.htm" then they'd have to go to freespace.virgin.net/username/about.htm instead of domainname.com/about.htm. That's assuming Virgin.net don't include DNS services...and at only 10mb free space I think I'm right.

Edit: did you want to know how to do it or how to go about register a domain name?

no, just wondering if it could be done, so if someone typed "shiatostorm.com" they'd end up at what would essentialy be freespace.virgin-yadayadayada...
i'm sort of planning to build a website to show my pictures off a little better, I have been given a copy of dreamweaver mx too - god knows how to use it - but if I can create something thats less than 10mb it might be worth a try, using off-site picture hosting as well which should cut the size of it down considerably.

I would just go with a cheap host that offers coppermine or something simple for the time being, get the pictures up there and then work on the rest of the site later, you really can get stupid deals on webhosting if you look, if you go stateside it could even cost you less than £10 a year plus £5 for the domain.

For £15 its worth going for off ISP hosting.

ukreg.com for a cheap domain with forwarding to whatever you want - that's what I'm doing at the moment.
