    Yes we had some issues...

    .... but over 30,000 people a minute trying to hit the site will kill most things...

    ... however, we have done some massive tweaking and I wish I could find a way to show you guys how fast the log files are going.

    It is coming *so* fast we are monitoring it closely....

    .. Sorry for the slow down, we have 2 new application servers going in soon and an iSCSI box, to couple with our current system setup.

    Hopefully we will have something soon which will fix this.

    A sys admin friend of mine suggested we took his academic systems approach - 1000X the specification is what HEXUS should deploy.. funny thing is, we get more traffic in an hour than they do in a year

    There are a lot of /. comments, I'm guessing it was very popular

    Also the forums are on the same server, so when the site goes down, you get lots of desperate people refreshing the forums.

    Actually, web sites that cannot stand Slashdotting are badly designed. Ace's Hardware survived a Slashdotting using a single ~500MHz UltraSPARC II server, running Java no less.

    I think people just don't realize how powerful even an ancient CPU is at pushing data, when it isn't running GNOME. Think about it, whole companies ran data centers on systems less powerful than a $400 PC not twenty years ago.

    yeh slashdot does that to a site.. a valuable reasource but well.. it tends to kill the sites that link to it.. 30000 a min is a hulluva lot.. how much bandwitch do you use up p/m.. one other forum i attend that is just a community project recenlty went under as we were eating 380 gb a month with (only) 100,000 hits pm.. 30000 a min is just insane
    AMD3000+ ATIX800XL + GBNF44x mobo.. all at stock because they're good enough atm + CA A1 amp-->Mission 73S Loigtech MX1000 + 1GB ram + 1/3 TB HD array
    Wintendo XP + Linux (when it works) .. just incase you were wondering
