    lorries at night...

what does it mean when a lorry repeatedly flashes their lights at you once you've over taken them on the motorway and pulled back into the inside lane?
just coming home this evening and for some reason this was happening quite a bit. now I know there's nothing wrong with the lights on the car and I know about that thing when you indicate once to say 'thanks' when you over take a lorry (when they flash to let you know you're past them and its safe to come back in lane) but it was a bit odd this evening as it happened quite a bit.
Had a few images of that film duel [or perhaps even breakdown] came to mind, thankfully my g/f hasn't seen either but I didn't fancy much being run down by an artic' ...
anyone able to shed light on this?

Some times if your on a hill (going up) and you pull back in, in front of them they get really pissed off cos they lose their momentum (after building it up before the hill) going up the hill. So flashing their lights is their way of giving you some verbal abuse. If you wasn't going up a hill at the time then i don’t know sorry.

if a lorry is overtaking something, it is good road manners to give them a flash (day or night) when the rear of their trailer is past the front of your car.. its hard for a lorry driver to judge this otherwise.. most people don't know to do this so its commonly only lorries that do it to each other.. its basically a way of saying 'come back'. if they flash you when your already in the lane, then i dunno, but if its just as your about to move back, thats why.

perhaps someone stuck 'flash if your horney' on the back of your car?

Yup, it's a courtesy thing. You'll also see that if you double flash an overtaking lorry, once he pulls into the lane he will then indicate left-right-left to thank you. You should also do the same if flashed into a lane by a lorry.

yes I know about the flashing to signify safe to pull in etc (as I mentioned earlier) but for some odd reason, even when we'd pulled in miles ahead of a lorry he/she/it would keep flashing... weird.

    Right the truck drivers way:

If they see you following and they pull slightly to the left they are letting you overtake, when you rejoin the lane they will flash you once to say hello.

If they flash you for a while generally means you took to long and have slowed them down.

If you over take them its generally a good thing to indicate left them right to say thank you, they will flash back.

Thats what you will basically see, I used to do the long hauls with my uncle in the summers and thats what we did driving the lorries.

In your case as they were flashing you from a distance, some of them have scanners/radar detectors, could of been warning you of a patrol in the area, only other reason could be he wasn't flashing you, the way the cabs are set up and hauling those huge trailers they generally bounce around a lot to take the bumps in the road with ease to soften the riide for the HGV driver, would of most likely been the cabs lights glinting in your mirror at certain periods.

As a rule of thumb ignore morrison and asda drivers as they seem to be grumpy buggers, they never flash or say thanks :/

Thanks, Grey; I shall now know how to be courteous to nice truck drivers.

As an aside, agree about the Morrisons drivers; when I was learning I nearly had the car totalled by a pushy Morrisons driver in an artic. Not a happy moment...

Yeah they don't seem a happy bunch. Its become a habbit now with me, the likes of buses if I let them out some will give you the thumbs up others will give you the hazard lights at which point I will flash once back, we won't mention the ones who don't say thank you at all.

Lorry drivers in the huge 20 - 60 tonne rigs, especially on the likes of the A1 and similar roads where it goes to a single lane, they are your eyes, if they see you behind they will pull over to the side, once past them and you pull in i always do the indicator left ten right to say thanks. Old habbits die hard I guess

Nice to see some courtesy on the roads tbh...

:edit: Oh yeah, the bus drives on the buses I get, always stick their thumbs up as a thanks to drivers who let them out, perhaps they're trained to do so? They also wave at other bus drivers, or give a flash at night.

To be honest, I'm not in the least bit surprised some of them are grumpy, considering how inconsiderate some drivers can be. Especially those who drive half in their lane and half over the bus lane, stopping buses from using them properly. I suppose it's a two way thing that will never change?

OK this is all news to me... This flashing lorries on motorway business

When I overtake them on the motorway I do it in the same way I'll do any other car... Just move out, overtake and then back in leaving loads of space. They never appear to get angry. Lol
