    Exercise how to get un-fat!

Okay, so here I am, a Brit living in the land of the fat people, and slowly it seems to be taking its toll. I try to get as much exercise in as possible but the amount is falling. I have a desk job, pushing buttons all day and live in a desert area so that now we've hit summer, regular day temps range from 35-42 deg. Therefore running etc. isn't really an option. I couldn't carry enough water.

Weights are fine for strength but I need cardio. So, what to do?

I was thinking of getting a rowing machine. I recall enjoying using those a while back - far more than a bike - anyone know anything about them? Any other suggestions?

    Machines, or something else?

apparently, 6 mins of intense cardio a week is just as good as 6 hours of leisurely excersise a week.

I say apparently cos i only read it in the paper this morning, but according to it, if you do 3 sets of 2 min intensive cycling, on the hardest setting going as fast as you can pushing yourself to the limit for the full 2 mins, it's just as good as 6 hours a week of less intensive excersise. However, i wouldnt say it used the same amount of calories....

Get a bike and a Camelbak with a 3 litre storage, that way you'll be able to carry enough water for at least 2 hours.

It's been a good, long while since I've done any biking. I wouldn't have a clue where to start. I have a dromedary bag, so that would work, but the heat here gets pretty intense. Not sure what other gear I'd need.

    Anyone have a clue?

    utter cr*p.

you could try but you'd fall apart after about 30-45 secs. if you're unfit you'd not make it to 2mins.

A cross trainer is a good machine to use if you want a cardio work out. If you get one get a good one, their steep in price though. Over here anyway.

What does a decent bike sell for these days? Anything I should look for in particular?

What the preferences on other machines around here? Bike, Nordic, Rowing etc..?

Ah, yes, you're a rower! Any recommendations on machines? We don't tend to have any rivers of the wet variety out here.

You'd probably want to find an air conditioned gym with their own machines, they're pretty expensive up front.

A top of the range Concept 2 indoor ergometer will set you back a cool £1000 or so, I know there are alternatives out there though...

a nice road bike would be my choice. should be about $700 at a guess - hard to translate prices. the thing i like about it is even starting out you'll be covering a good 10 miles and will gradually build up to more like 30 miles soon enough, with that range to can really go somewhere, see something and have a bit of an adventure. appeals to me anyway.

like shiato said tho a rower is better all round, but less fun imo.

    whats wrong with a gym?

Go swimming, jog at night, anything. You can stay cool and get a work out at the same time.

You don't need equipment, or a gym membership, to excercise. Just do something.

provided you sort out the problem of breasthing in time with your stroke...i hear water doesn't do too well in the lungs, thats why I sit on top of it rather than in it

breathing in time with your stroke isnt hard, it takes a bit of practice, but it's not in the least bit hard. Altho if you have no rhythm i can see where it could be a problem, but being a rower you should have good rhythm
