Rubbish! If you take advantage of the proxy bidding function, you are immune from snipers. Just bid the maximum you would be willing to pay, and let the bidding take its course.

The only reason you are getting stung is that you are employing a tactic designed to circumvent the proxy bidding process.

    You are a hypocrite, Sir!

Sorry, I'm a sniper; Its the only way to use ebay.

At the end of the day, something is worth what your prepared to pay for it. If someone snipes your bid, then they were obviously willing to pay more than you.

Why snipe? It means theres less chance of the auction getting overinflated, and also means I don't end up paying more than I want to for the item.

yup, other wise you get idiots bidding things up to near or over retail prices for 2nd hand kit, which is *really* annoying..

yup, never place a bid with much more than about 15secs left - you'll probably be out-bid.

I don't agree with software that bids for you. But I do think bidding in the last 45seconds is needed if you want something badly - and you've also got the chance to bid more so as not to be outbid so easily.

    Generally speaking my bid goes in with 4 seconds to go;

No software, just watch and wait.

    eBay noob

Thats exactly the WORST way to use ebay. Only fools put a bid in more than 2 hours before the end of the auction. That why stuff is always so over priced in the end. Great for the seller, great for eBay, but bad for buyers.

It sure is. It's a shame, but thats the way eBay works and I want to pay the least amount possible, not get into a bidding war that sends the price way above even new retail prices.

By far the best way to do it is use Auction Sniper with a snipe say 2 seconds before the end. Stops you even having to be at you PC. I have got tonnes of bargins this way.

<pimp> Click this link and sign up HERE. It will give you 3 free snipes and I will get 3 for free too . I have been using it for over 2 years now and it's very good and safe. It has been very highly rated by many good internet mags. Don't need to hand over and info link credit card number or anything like that. Just use the 3 free snipes and stop using it if you want</pimp>

Who said anything about bidding early? I certainly didn't.
Many of my bids have been in the very last second of the auction.
I bid what I'm willing to pay. I let the proxy bidding do its stuff. Often I get a bargain. Sometimes I pay my maximum bid. Sometimes I lose the auction - because someone else is willing to pay more than me. My strategy is optimal.

I was merely pointing out to the OP that he can't complain if he bids early and is outbid by a sniper. He should have bid what he thought it was worth if he uses that strategy. Snipers have no magic way of knowing what other's maximum bid was.

The only people people who suffer because of snipers are those who think it's a good idea to increase their bid repeatedly by small amounts in some kind of crazy race. They are the ones who are behaving unethically IMO, trying to keep the price artificially low by bypassing the proxy bidding process. I say "trying" because it doesn't work, it's a lousy tactic. As far as I'm concerned, people like that are fair game for snipers.

There's nothing unethical about sniping. You are putting in what you think is a fair bid at the end of the auction. Since you probably won't get a chance to bid again, you genuinely bid the amount you think the item is worth (to you.)
