    Price or Quality?

In ANY purchase, do you look for PRICE or QUALITY FIRST

Don't gimme any of that "its all a matter of balance" malarky....

cos we all agree. But FIRST.....

do you look for what you REALLY SHOULD HAVE...or what you can REALLY AFFORD?

    Choose 1....only one.

    No poll...just a post

Quality first, I find a product I would like and then see if i can afford it. If i can't afford it i'd usually find a way to be able to afford it

Thats not to say cheap as chips is bad tho.

I find something to a quality I like, then find it as cheap as poss, so I'd have to say quality comes first.

I set myself a price range and look for the best in that range. If there is nothing good enough or to my tastes in that range, then I will save up more £££ or wait.

depends entirely on the item. some stuff i skimp on, others i dont.

food for instance, is definately cost first. home cinema equipment is the other way round - quality first. stuff like mountain biking - i'd say quality first but then consider the price

Gut reaction shopping for me, if I see something good quality and then look at the price and go, "crikey, that's a tad much" but then followed by "...still, it's good quality and a cheaper one would only break etc" then quality wins.

I definitely agree with the cheap food idea...

I was mainly thinking electrical goods in my first post. It's hard to answer really because it differs so much from product to product.

It also depends on how much money is burning a hole in your pocket, the more I have the more I look for quality. But that goes without saying I presume...

To sum things up I would say quality is more important than price. You would rather spend more for something that is better than less for worse in most cases. Food being an exception for me.

Quality first, then try to find the best price for it

Don't agree with the cheap food thing - crap in = crap out

Quality food isn't always expensive, but what price can you put on your health?

Well....I never buy anything without prevaricating about the price, but I will spend out to get decent stuff if it's worth it. I'm a bit like 5lab in that my food is cheap and my bike and Hi-Fi are expensive- but both are a mish-mash of quality parts bought at relatively bargain prices. I used to buy quality stuff that I didn't actually need just because it was a 'bargain', but I've finally managed to put a halt to that (mainly because my overdraft has forced me to).

    Ditto.

I look for the exact product I want to buy first, and then find the cheapest price.

I don't know how internet shops can sell stuff more expensive than other internet shops with sites like kelkoo and pricerunner about. If everyone did the sensible thing and brought what ever was selling that item the cheapest, then a lot of shops would probabaly go out of business.

There are any number of reasons why prices vary:

Time at which stock was bought (so the basic stock costs more)
Number of units purchased (discounts for bulk, or large corporate discounts if you buy direct)
Supplier related issues (some suppliers are cheaper than others - corporate bulk rates, business relationships etc)
Size of shop/number of staff employed/etc (bigger shop/more staff = higher overheads)
Location (Business rates & shipping costs vary)

If it was just a matter of being the cheapest then everyone would buy computer parts from ebuyer (for example), but it's not, so people buy from any number of different places.

I won't get the cheapest stuff I can find, cos generally it looks nasty

And I wont waste 150 quid on a pair of jeans like Vaul, just cos their prada

I got for reasonably priced stuff, and then shop around finding the best deal, TK Maxx is a good example, designed clothes at knock down prices, there quality and occasioanlly you get great bargains - I found a pair of dickies jeans which retail for about 60 quid, these are the sort of things I'd think about buying, but for slightly less, there not worth 150 like some jeans, infact, there not even worth 60, I think a fair price would be about 25 quid, however, I managed to pick them up last week for 7 quid So there alrite, and cheap.

Same with PC parts, I wont go for top spec, but I wont go for ridiculously low spec just to save money

My current PC cost me in the region of about 150, and is realtivly good, its not the best, with all this X85050505050XT with bells and whistles hanging off here and there, but its not exactly a 233 celeron either

No - I'm saying why don't the customers just buy the cheapest? I know why a business might have to have a higher price, but if I was going to buy something, I'd ALWAYS get the cheapest price for the item, unless I've had some sort of terrible experience with that shop that'd make me not shop there again (no happened yet).

I suppose people often don't go for the cheapest because of the service. I've ordered about 3 CD's from www.blahdvd.com. Although they've always been the cheapest, it ususally takes at least a week for the CD to get to me. Maybe another option to the thread in addition to price and quality should be the service. Unless I'm really desparate for something (a broken computer part for example), I usually don't mind waiting for something to be delivered, so long as I'm getting the cheapest price. However, I expect that all shops should give excelant customer service via phone/email.
