I like some of the music but Chris Martin can't sing...it's more of a wailing.

Am I the only one who thinks that, probably due to a lack of anything better, there are a lot of groups at the moment that are just totally overhyped and overrated? I've also noticed that there are a new breed of borderline chavs who list their interests as 'rock', who love the aforementioned bands.

I'm a bit of an indie fella, but I'm not limited to just that. Anyway:

U2 - Complete sellouts to Apple
Radiohead - Make me want to kill myself
Coldplay - Make me want to kill them

    £0.02

edit: Oh, and Iron Maiden are the greatest band on the face of the earth.

You mean like 99% of the mainstream music out there on the radio and charts Fly by night groups an album and a single then they disappear.

    I don't mind U2's music, can't stand coldplay though.

Well I really like Coldplay actually... so thats 1 vs 35 posts

Got all 3 albums, the new one is nowhere near as good as the other two. The Scientist is one of my favourite songs and Im going see them at Crystal Palace tomorrow night.

They dont make me want to kill myself - I just think that Coldplay are one of those bands where you have to appreciate 'the words' to the songs not just the songs themselves.

Listen to Priest's latest offering and their British Steel albums, they are their best. Megadeth is one of those bands you either love em or hate em, like marmite really Dave is a great guitarist and as of late Megadeth is taking a turn for the worst with his I love jesus get up with him being a born again christian but metallica lost out when they got rid of Dave Megadeth I would say stick to their pre 90's stuff and you cant go wrong

Scary thing about Iron Maiden, they would of never happened if they weren't inspired by Priest 0.o As told by Steve Harris himself in an interview

Priest peaked with Screaming for Vengence imo (awesome tour, Hammersmith Odeon iirc). British Steel is also classic.

    Saxon anyone? Wheels of Steel.

Still, looking forward to Anthrax @ Colchester arts Centre soon. Last gig I saw there was Suicidal Tendencies. T'was simply awesome, as good if not better than when I last saw them.

U2 however despite the selling out over recent years did make one of the best albums of all time despite it not being my favourite style of music I can appreciate good stuff when I hear it and the Joshua Tree is the greatest thing they ever put out tbh

The deterioration in pop music has been evident for a while now.......

In the sixties we had the beatles, hendrix, the who

In the seventies there were led zepplin, ac/dc, iron maiden, aerosmith

Even the eighties, the decade that taste forgot gave us guns and roses, bon jovi and metallica

The nineties are when the boy bands start to emerge and the only to decent bands I can think of right now starting up then are blur and oasis

Then we move into the new millenium and what have we got? 50 cent telling me how many times he's been shot, three of a kind telling me about someone called babycakes, coldplay making me wish i was deader than jackets with little leather elbow patches.

Its not fair I tell thee!
I totally agree. The most modern band's music I have now is a "recent" motley crue CD, which is actually made up of old songs, and a velvet revolver CD, which is actually made up of old members of other bands.

There aren't many decent bands out there now, and it's a shame really. I've thought about or even have each and everyone of those great bands you listed. They sure don't make 'em like they used to .

Wow Saxon, thats a name I haven't heard in a while, for some reason when I was about 17 listening to these, even the metallers would give you a hard time about it lol. The album you state is a gooduun for Saxon but for me, Cathedral came out on top

Its Daves voice that puts me off, watched em from up on the bank at download and the guitar work was great, its just that voice :-/

Anthrax will be a damn good show man, they're on top form at the moment, caught the end of the set at download (went off to see meshuggah) and they were great.

I would love to see Anthrax, got all their albums through all the line up changes, I can't get tickets anyway or the time off work to drive down south for it :/ Dave's voice now is a little to be desired but when they first started, Dave was better vocally than Hetfield

Its the original line-up they're playing with atm, makes for a damn good show imo. Its a pity really though that mosta the best bands I've seen this year are either small venue undergroundish bands or older guys like sabbath and slayer etc. There's no huge unstoppable band out there taking over the pop charts and getting groupies screaming like there's no tommorow. Sure there are good bands appearing here and there like trivium, chimara, society1 etc. but none that are gonna turn music around from the sorry state its gotten itself into.

In regards to Coldplay - I'm not a fan per se, however I appreciate their music and think they've done an excellent job at doing what they do. It's quite middle of the road, nice music but don't concentrate too much. They do have excellent piano hooks, the lyrics and arrangement are thoughtful and tastefully done. By no means are they a controversial or edgy band but I certainly don't find them an annoyance, and I think their presence only helps the music industry.

It certainly is a lot more tasteful than the Crazy Frog, or the endless supply of 80's loop based dance music that's coming out (can someone please save dance music please?).

Secondly, Radiohead I think are a significant band, and again, although I don't buy their music they are good to have around - and certainly do have the edge Coldplay doesn't but despite that limiting their marketshare it certainly doesn't limit their credibility.

Don't forget, the 90's and 2000's brought Franz Ferdinand, Muse, The Killers, The Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age (back again!), Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Radiohead - tons of acts there. The problem I think is basically the commodotisation of the industry (radio included) has limited the exposure of edgy or non-radiogenic bands for the sake of maintaining profits by playing safe music.

For the most part I agree with people's comments about oversaturation of a limited amount of urban music, but I don't think Coldplay are a bad thing to have around. Above all I wish that radio stations, music channels and clubs would be a lot more open minded in what they play.

Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, The Strokes And The Foo's all play that safe kinda indie/alt rock, While they may be good at what they do its got no balls to it at all. QOTSA are a good band but hardly in the league I mentioned in my post, I Will give you Nirvana though despite the fact I think they are wildly overated.
