according to my hygenist, "a complete waste of time; Get a standard braun one with a compact head"
Thats what I did
i have one and find it excellent
I don't doubt its a good toothbrush, just that the "sonic" bit isn't worth paying a kings ransom for - Much in the same way that stupid razor that uses sonic pulses to lift hairs will never find its way into my bathroom.
Toothbrushes that actually use ultrasound to clean your teeth are highly effective (a more powerful version can be used at the dentists). This is just an overpriced electric toothbrush with a turbo stuck on it
I've tried the Braun rotaries - they feel crude and underpowered IMO.
I've tried the UltraSonex (true ultrasonic + brushing action) - it feels like it's doing nothing. I'm certain the ultrasonic action is far too weak to be effective (i.e. create the cavitation effect.) I think that if it was powerful enough to clean ultrasonically it would be banned for being dangerous.
I now use Sonicare (not ultrasonic, but it is powerful and fast.) It's just the nicest to use. And it doesn't work out too expensive, as the body will last 2-3 years easily, and the heads last 6 months. I actually have two, one I use for a week while the other is in the charger, then I swap. My last pair (old models) kept going for 4 years that way until I upgraded to the new ones.
If you are too lazy to work on good technique, the Brauns might be a better bet. Their brush heads are more likely to splay out and clean under the gumline without effort from you.
Don't buy a Sonicare and just run it lazily over your teeth. They would feel beautifully clean & smooth, but you wouldn't be cleaning under the gums very well. You need to angle the brush against the tooth, apply a little pressure so the bristles curve and go under the gumline, then either make small circular movements or rotate the whole brush along its axis so the bristles flick stuff out from under the gumline. In other words, use the same correct method you're supposed to use with a manual toothbrush!
Once you get it right with the Sonicare, you'll never go back.
