    Insurance companies and laptop damage

In short I've dropped my lovely Athlon64 Amilo laptop, cracked the screen and also (very suprisingly as not running at time) damaged the Hitachi 7K60 I paid £115 for as well. To top it off, gotta buy 2 new Pirelli tyres tommorow. Such a wonderful weekend!

I'm with churchill at the moment and I'm covered for accidental damage.

What' i'd like to know is how do insurance companies really deal with such cases and how long did it take for you to recieve your replacement?

    Thanks in advanced.

You need to check that Dropping is included as part of the accidental damage.

Normally claims take around 2-3weeks. My last claim for stolen property took 2 weeks.

I think so - I checked the contract with churchill with a fine tooth comb before putting it away.

It depends - I just claimed on my 17" TFT as my missus dropped a metal box on it and scratched the screen. Claimed through my insurance company who dealt with it through assessors called 'The Source' iirc. They came and collected it from work, tested it within a couple of days and confirmed it was not repairable. They couldn't replace it with an identical model but I had a bit of a negotiation with the person dealing with the claim and found that they had a deal with Dell, so I asked about the 2001FP. They ended up doing me one as a simple replacement within a few days and all I had to pay was my excess. I would think that the assessors for yours will go through a similar process - its always worth having a crack with these folk.

I just found out they also deal with 'The Source'. To my knowledge, it might be possible to replace the screen at the cost of £400 + labour and such. My excess is only £60, and so far thats all I need to pay.

    Cheers so far!

yup, I had to pay the £75 excess on our policy too, which is a lot better than paying £400 for a new screen

The Source just contacted me , took all details and spec down. Advisor confirmed if uneconomical to fix (I estimate the damage at £400 for screen + £115 for 7K60 HDD + £labour) that they will replace it with a new one.

They better sort out my 7K60 too... that drive is amazing.

    hi there,
i think you should know the policy or the terms and conditions or the term the insurance company refer that you deal with about the damage (before)

    then, that is great!
    change in to brand new
    cheers

Yup, read it word for word, and would have cancelled it had it not covered the laptop.

This link shows someone of a similar laptop spec getting a nice dell in replacement. How does the Pentium-M compare in compile times? One of the reasons I got an athlon64 is how stonkingly fast it will compile my apps.

Just got a quote for the LCD panel and cabinet, £440 for components only! £110 for HDD + Labour, well over £600. All from turning around

sounds about right. might be cheaper to get a low-spec 2nd hand laptop with the same case/screen and replace it yourself.

i destroyed a really nice 3 year old toshiba portege laptop a couple of years ago by accident (dropped it and it was very dead - screen dead, internals dead etc). it had cost £2400 3 years ago, and i had new-for-old on my policy. fortunately, even thou it was only a PIII 600, i got £1800 cos the nearest new laptop available (my old one was ultra-ultra-thin, with 10 hours battery life) was that price. £1800 for a 3 year old laptop is pretty good imo

Its 'The source' dealing with it as mentioned above. From what I've calculated by actually calling up part suppliers, I think its classed as uneconomical to fix therefore i'll most likely get a Dell replacement.

It could be worse I do prefer AMDs - hate the idea of lining Intel's pocket - although an equally clocked Pentium M is just as good as an Athlon64 in many areas. There's always ebay if I really cant live with it

You might find that it just gets repaired, obviously the various companies don't pay retail prices for the parts, so it might just scrape through
