Am I *meant* to be psychic?

Just had some engineer at work come to me and say:

    "Where's my file?"

Me: "Have I ever used it?"

    "No"

Me: "Do you remember where you saved it?"

    "No"

Me: "DO you remember what its called?"

    "No"

    Me: "try the search feature"

    "There's a search feature?"

me: *explains how to use search"

    "Oh, OK, thanks"

    5mins later

"I left my file at home, can you get it for me off the computer?"

    Me: "No."

Thats not being psychic is called being part of the computing trade and putting up with fools at times

Edit: Nice to see you added the "meant" into the title but still we all have to deal with people like this. I got a call the other day saying that they have lost the ball in their mouse only to find out it was an optical one all along. They get worse but today I am stuck with the servers, no users in sight

Best one was I got so sick of this one person who had no idea of how to use a PC even though they were the Lecturer of the subject asking how to turn on the PC. Next day I get a call asking where the computer has gone and what the slate and chalk was for. They didn't get the joke at all.

what amazes me is the level of stupidity found amongst our own. I work in the Server Support side of things and when we get calls escelated to us by our desktop guys cos they cant fix it, you would expect that they have done their job properly and determined where a call should be directed.

But no - apparently if one user out of a hundred is affected only when she logs into a certain pc - not when she goes to any others, only when on this pc, which happens to give the same error no mater who logs in, its a server problem. not a desktop workstation problem, but a server problem.

We had a lecturer for C++ programming come into the lecture room start to load her file from the cd and then BSOD.

3 technicians come over in about 10mins and were looking at it trying to work it out.

They took the whole thing apart and found that a component had blown up.

    God knows how that happened

I had a similar one but using an Access database.

tested it on 10 machines and one didn't like it. No matter what I tried it hated it.

Then I just lazily clicked the problem button by accident (thought dangit cos it normally stalls the machine) and it worked fine.

    Works fine now too.

Shadowcopy FTW! we've used it for sometime now and it does save people calling all the time to ask for copies of things they have deleted.

How many file and print servers ( as those are the only ones you'd need to shadow ) are you running nicho ?

There's only a couple of file&print , so the price of the server upgrades isn't that bad, but the CALs swiftly take a large chunk; it's not that major a problem, only the very occasional user, and TBH I have rather more urgent budget priorities.
