Thats crazy, your prices are pretty much the same as ours here in Canada, but yours are in GBP! Ours are around 0.98$ CDN, and in the states its about 0.60$ CDN (and those Americans can complain!)

I should have spent my inheritance on barrels of oil four years ago, would have made 350%.

Cheapest I've seen has been 88.9p at a BP station about 2 miles away and most expensive is 93.7p at some wee station near my old high school.

Actually, based on current exchange rates and national averages, gas in the United States works out to be about $.80 CDN/L.

Yes, we have relatively cheap petrol compared to the rest of the world.

No, gas is not going to get any cheaper. As China's and India's booming economies drive more and more vehicles into the hands of their large populations, demand for oil will continue to climb while supply will not be met (although, if Iraq's oil production can become what it should be, it can delay the inevitable). It really sucks that U.S. oil companies have been squashing oil alternatives and general efficiency improvements via aquiring/hoarding patents (not to mention the undocumented things that I can't prove *cough* bribery *cough*).

tbh i think the us will gain massive benefit when the general populus move over to oil burning cars - that is rapeseed oil - you guys have got one of the biggest supplies of that sort of crop at the moment - i'm surprised your industry doesnt push for it

I'm not. Petrol makes far more money and the technology that uses it is right there, without any development costs - any monkey these days can make an internal combustion engine and it's easier/cheaper to make it burn petrol. They're not looking into alterative energy sources cos they're greedy, robbing gets who're laughing all the way to the bank.

I live in essex - no im not an essex boy, no i dont wear white trainers , no i dont drive an escort (i wasnt even born here) and near me prices seem to fluctuate between garages. There is a dodgy looking asian run garage kinda out the way but still pretty close to the likes of tescos and sainsburiess which is always at least 8p more than anywhere else. And only ever has one customer there.

I remember talking to a high up engineer who worked in a big oil company and he said that petrol for most oil companies makes little or no profit. Remember petrol is really just a by product, the big billions of dollars in profits you always see the news quote is actually from their main use of crude oil which is plastics etc. And in the UK the petrol price is something like 80% or more tax.

Absolutely, I saw abc news last night talking about the huge rise in oil price and the solution they wanted? Build more refineries!!! Now there's a narrow minded quick fix short term solution. G W Bush would have been proud.

BP's operating profit on a litre of petrol in the UK is 0.6p. Petrol stations make money on the other stuff they sell. There is no way they can cut the price because that would be subsidising the petrol and that is illegal. Profits come from exploration and extraction.

If the price of a barrel goes up due to demand then we see big profits being made which incidentally find their way into peoples pensions, not to mention the chancellors coffers. BP and Shell are two of the biggest UK companies so portfolio managers include them for pensions portfolios.

In the UK we have the cheapest price for petrol before tax anywhere in Europe. Mr Brown postponed a rise in duty in his last budget. I wonder why?

As for alternative fuels I wonder if we could grow sugar beet and produce alchohol for cars. Better than leaving land fallow - CAP. Don't think much modification for engines would be required. It should be carbon neutral too.

Hey, if it solves the problem long enough for it to become someone elses problem, then thats a success by american political standards.
