    BT charges versus Skype charges

Right, from what I can see on the Skype website, they charge 0.012 GBP per minute for calls to UK landlines..

After hunting around the BT for ten minutes and going from page to page, it seems that their most basic option (the one where you don't have to pay out stupid amounts each month for better deals) is 0.05 GBP per minute.

Please feel free to check these figures and correct me if I'm wrong, but the case for getting a Skype phone is getting stronger by the day...

You can actually buy phones that plug into your USB port as well now. Have BT launched a VOIP service? If not I am sure they will do soon.

You can buy wireless Skype phones too now so you can use them around the house/garden.

BTW, anyone ever tried skype on 56k?

skype works quite well on 56k, remeber what compression GSM (cellular, mobile phones) use!

but skype is a bloody rip off, i don't want to pay for a uk landline call, that sorta stupidity should be reserved for backwards places like wales.

    http://www.voipcheap.co.uk/ look at their tarrif.

hehe voipbuster is very similar to voipcheap, sister companies i think. But voipcheap is cheaper!

don't forget you can use some services like http://www.call1899.co.uk/rates.php as well, 3p a min to mobiles at weekends.... still expensive but the best option i've found besides my vodaphone 60minuites for the price of 3 deal.

I saw a program on skype a few months ago. At the end, there was the usual story of a couple converted to using skype permanently. They tried to phone BT up to cancel their phone line rental, but keep their broadband access. It seems that BT won't let you cancel the phone line without getting rid of the internet too, so you'd be paying for your BT phone line rental plus your skype calls. This will still probably work out cheaper, but you should still be able to canel one without the other.

Stoo ofcom are looking at making BT offer a PSTN-less service, said to be about £8 a month cheaper.... very tempting imo.

but skype for VOIP. NO BLOODY WAY thanks!

what happens when you want to dial 112? With a good BT landline they know were u are and can send the ambulance there with relative ease, on a mobile its much harder.

Skype for voip in my own experience is quite terrible. Its pear 2 pear architecture sends your call to china and back, nevermind QOS being crap.
