Ikea - Why oh why do I do this to myself?

    <rant>

Ok because I had a meeting planned for this afternoon I decided that I would go to Ikea and see what deals they had going as I have needed to get some drawers and a bed for a while and seeing as i had the time I thought I would go to Ikea on the way.

Therein lies problem number one. Its peed down all day, to the point the M1 was more water than tarmac. But seeing as ill only keep putting it off I struggle on.

I arrive at Ikea and then the first panic sets in, will a bed fit in my car? I go get one of the Ikea tape measures and head out to the car. Measured Im on the hunt for a suitable bed to buy.

Finally chose bed, get bed in car, think oh theres more room and go back into Ikea and pick up two chest of drawers, so thats three flat packs to build.

After the meeting I head on home, getting fed and ready to build the bed from around 9. Lug all the boxes upstairs and slice them all open looking for the box out of the three that has the manual in it. Jackpot, its in box 2, why? I have no idea, but I flick through it and then look at all the parts I have there.

Problem number two rears its self. The manual refers to the central beam for the bed and the corresponding slats to put the mattress on. Problem is, boxes dont contain said pieces.

Call customer services at Ikea, as apparently the rather irritatingly smiling puzzled customer in the manual looks satisfied speaking to these people.

Within 5 seconds I realise the person who picked up the phone is irritatingly cheery, so much so i would love her to be able to see me sitting, surrounded by boxes and wondering how out of three boxes I dont have all the parts.

I tell her my predicament, she cheerily responds 'you need to purchase them separately, the store should have informed you' well, strangely, seeing as Im sitting here 58 miles from the store I purchased it from without all the parts needed, they didn't. Her cheeriness didnt even faulter when I asked how a bed can have no slats.

So there you have it, I have to go back to the hell hole that is the world of flat pack and ask them where they keep their slats and beams.

Meanwhile, im off to sleep in the box the bed came in, seeing as my mattress hits the floor everytime I put it in my new 'bed'.

Of course, whilst at Ikea tomorrow i will ask them, as a matter of cause, if I need to by the bases for the two chest of drawers I bought, wouldn't want to have to go back again for them.

    heh heh
personally i havent had problems assembling ikea furniture,
never had pieces missing either, the viking direct desk did prove difficult as there were 1.5 zillion screws with allen key attachments instead of a screwdriver
I got fed up of playing around with a tiny allen key that I just went and cut the allen key in half and put it into my cordless drill

I've been to Ikea once and hope never have to go again. I hated the place.

How can they get away with charging extra for slats and beam?

Having said that, the person I went with bought a bed with the extra bits, under bed slide out draw, and a double wardrobe. Then went and got a corner desk - probably the best bit of furniture he bought.

They are highly overrated in IMHO.

ikea's desks i love, the big, customiseable nature of it.

Its really great because you can get it all done in one day, the problem is its a bit complicated, luckily, this is the sorta thing i rock at, this lego, quadro, and those pattern and block IQ tests.

As for the beds i like the fact they have tall people beds. Not the bloody stupid midget ones most english chains stock. Is it too much to ask to get a long bed in single, or 1.5 *?

Also the cheap hotdogs at the end are great because its a 3 hour drive back home. Aditionally its always raining when you come out of ikea.

Only been to Ikea once but it obviously did something to my brain as on the way home I filled my (petrol) car with diesel . A drive home, a very poorly car, collection by a nice AA man and waiting round till midnight at a garage to get engine drained/cleaned whatever and I made it back home.

Gearing myself up for another visit soon as need to get new desk for daughter and she likes a corner one in their catalogue.

Ikea furnature is ok, but a lot of the stuff can be easily duplicaed in the workshop at home. In fact it prolly takes me the same amount of time to make it from scratch as it does to assemble those godforsaken flatpacks.

Have a REAL love/hate relationship with the place...

Can sympathise entirely on the bed front - Had the EXACT same problem myself. Then drove 80 miles to be given the WRONG sized slats. Cheery customer services couldn't understand why I didn't relish the idea of driving back for a 3rd time to get the right size ones - I just attacked them with a saw and made them fit.

Then came the final insult - UK beds are still measured in imperial sizes, Ikea beds are metric, so my £400 uber matress has an inch gap around it.... Grrrrrrrrrrrr

ok just been back there again, thats another 60 miles, and i had to pay for it all.

What really takes the mick though is the pic in the self serve HAS the beam on it.

Gonna call thier customer services later, but not for anything other than for them to get the damn thing right in store.

its futile! save the time you'll spend on the phone and use it in the pub where it'll be more worthwhile to you
