    Drummer boy :P

I decided that I'll take up drumming in about a few months time after one of my close friends indirectly asked me, I only agreed because we go way back...

And also, it'll be nice to have a non computer-technological talant...

I was just wondering what you lot thought about it since you're all such a thoughtful bunch...

I would say go for it. If you have natural rhythm and your willing to practice it will be very rewarding to be able to create music with friends and for people who enjoy listening. I have played drums and Latin percussion for nearly 15 years; with orchestras, studios and bands but even if it's just you and some mates in the back of a local pub rocking; nothing for me comes close to the feeling. Do it! Some advice, it doesnt matter what style your playing, what every drummer needs to do firstly is keep the groove solid and in the pocket. An easy way to get the chops happening is to play along with some of your favorite tracks on the kit, a practice pad or even if it's air drumming (although this can be much harder work than playing on a kit as there is no bounce back from a drum head but still a good work out though heh).

Give yourself a bit of a headstart, and attempt to pat on your knee and move your right foot to a song. Most songs use a 4/4 beat and that was what i started learning first. I'm sure at this point, you know what kind of sound each drum makes, so attempt to be able to get and keep a beat going.

You need to be able to move both feet and arms seperately/independantly as said above, and I've heard a lot of drum teachers work on using your feet first. So maybe that should be your starting point?

Drumming for me is a hobbie, it helps me to calm down, relax, and its very fun. Downside is it can become a bit expensive!

if your catholic having natural rythem is rather usefull.

drummers always get ripped on by any other members of the band, but there important too (its just they have soooo much gear to lug round).

promise us one thing thou, you won't become one of those people that just starts saying "i'm in a band" and expect girls to fall at their feet, and peers to be generally impressed.

I was actually considering shaving my hair... it would be so much easier, but quite a big change. Also my head would look massive if I did :/

Noticed there may be quite a few drummers or budding drummers on here, so I'd like to update y'all and say its been almost a year now since I started drumming and I can drum quite a few songs.

About thirty songs in all and most of them are Marilyn Manson songs like Coma White, Tourniquet, Disassociative, Disposable Teens, Fight Song...

I feel so proud to finally be able to call myself a... [ wait for it ] DRUMMER!

So keep at it like I have been and you'll soon get to an acceptable level, but don't be kidding yourself thinking you'll get good inside a few weeks otherwise you'll only let yourself down and then you'll be put off.

    Very true.

Learning a few beats can be easy to learn, but getting technical with the hi-hat/bass drum/snare can be very hard to get the hang of!

It's all about each of your limbs being completely independant, being able to do different to each other.

Unfortunatly, I sold my drums, and I miss them, really do. But my next kit (because I will definitely buy another) will be for keeps. £500+ on a kit, and I got £200 and watched it drive away. At the time I wasn't bothered, but now I miss it like I'd miss my right arm if I ever lost it.
