Yeah, smoking rollies means less cash, but so what? The cash is just an extra incentive and a reward... it's the giving up the relly matters...

Trouble is, I usually buy my tobacco in bulk on the weekly shopping trip... I stick it in my card, so now I've got to install and PDQ machine and store the card receipts in the jar...

    Well,

I have also been debating weather or not to give up over the last few months as well, mainly to due with health issues but also as my partner is expecting I suppose it would be best to give the habit up now before the little one comes along (I really cant see me trying to give up with all the stress with sleepless nights etc), and I suppose if I give up now all the extra cash will really come in handy.

Aww congrats, never is a good time to give up, there will always be some excuse, but a baby on the way is a fantastic oppurtunity, definately helps if you have a good reason to give up, i gave up smoking when i was pregnant 12 years ago ( you wouldn't believe the amount of people who criticised me for it ) and i havent smoked since

Jon's Mum smokes 60 a day and she is a perfect deterrent for my Kids, they
are determined not to smoke, they are always telling her how disgusting her habit is

Nick! wish you all the luck in the world with giving up, well done

Well, today is the first day... it's nearly 11am and I've not had one so far.

For those of you that don't think this is an acheivement, I would normally have a fag first thing as soon as I got up, then another before taking the kids to school, one in the car on the way back and at least two more by now...

I sitting here with my nicotine patch on, chewing gum, eating carrot sticks and keeping myself busy.

I had a MAJOR urge about 10 minutes ago, but luckily I was on the phone and having destroyed any remaining tobacco/fags I couldn't go down the shops and buy some cos I was talking to someone.

The urge has passed somewhat now... but I've got me some celery to nibble to break that 'hand to mouth' habit... and some lollipop sticks if I feel I need to have something in my gob.

I reckon this first day is going to be the worst by far, just because of all the habit and routine breaking I'm doing.

    Time to crack on!

When my mum trys to give up, she says the first two days are worst, then it just gets easier and easier, and you start to feel much better and taste things better.

    Go Nick!

I haven't had a cigarette since Saturday - like you I would normally have had 4/5 at least by this time of day. Have had full-blown 'man-flu' since saturday, and sitting on the edge of the bed at 3 in the morning, struggling for breath was a good incentive to reconsider my smoking habbit. The NHS website has all the tv adverts etc, I'm trying to find the mag/newspaper that had the one ' If you think giving up smoking is hard, try telling your children you have lung cancer ' as would like to have that displayed in the house to give me a kick up the bum when I have a craving.

Yep, I'm another Hex-ite that's trying to kick the habit. It's part of a whole "get myself healthy" thing I've started. I'm dieting, just got a new gym membership, and AM going to give up smoking.

I've lost half a stone already from the gym/dieting (started at 17st 6), and I will not have another smoke. My wife is always going on about my "unsociable habit", and if I quit that'll pay for my gym membership and then some.

I've decided to do things/get things to motivate myself. So when I hit 16 stone I'm thinking of a new bass guitar (stopping smoking will pretty much pay for it in the time I'll need to get to 16 stone), when I get to 15 stone etc. etc. The same is going to be true of the smoking situation, although I haven't decided what my reward will be (other than not hacking up cr@p in the morning, increased fitness and not stinking like an ashtray).

Cash wise, on a ten-a-day habit, that's the best part of £460 over six months. £1830 over 2 years on that basis .... and that is a hefty potion of the cash I need to get myself a kit-car. On a twenty-a-day habit, over years that translates to £3650 in 2 years....enough for the entire comprehensive kit for the car.....

....I'll be kicking the habit then....
