I'm gonna go out on one....*dons flame proof suit*

HL1 was a shocking game. It represents the end of gaming as I enjoyed it. I find it boring, tedious and has no overiding feel to it.

The simplest way I can explain it is this.

    DooM:

A few people go round Freds house and he's got DooM on his computer. Everyone gathers around and wants a blast at it.

    Half Life:

A few people go round Freds house and he's playing Half Life. Infact, he's been playing half life for two hours and is engrosed in some level with a lot of irritating bug things jumping around. All agree the pub would be more fun.

I know there's always been 'arcade' and 'single player story' games, but EVERYONE played DooM and everyone played Half Life. For me it marks a definate shift away from the biggest computer games being fun to them being complicated.

I'd rather sit down and bash through Streets of Rage two with a mate than sit on my own faffing with HL2.

Personal preference, but HL marked the end of my enjoyment of games in general.

Well if you found Half Life 1 to be the end of all games you enjoy, then clearly you are not a gamer. It's been ages since that game was released, and if you actually haven't enjoyed gaming, I wouldn't force it upon youself to enjoy that pastime.

HL1 was epic - there was a thread running through it and it was one of the first fps to use ai not to mention super graphics. There were plenty of puzzles to tax the brain too. HL multiplayer was alot of fun aswell.

Actually you've got a point there.. i miss the pick up and play games like DOOM, Playing it for an hour and just getting the adrenaline rush while shooting demons in the head with a shotgun, and jumping out of my skin when an imp appears on screen behind u

Whereas HL1 & 2 are scripted and need some thought to complete the level and also to survive, whereas doom mostly needed reflexes.

    Back on topic
    -------------

Half life is still a great game but the graphics are getting very dated
(I dont have the source version)

And the scripted element and the puzzles do my head in
"Mmm... I want you for my wife!"
    "Autom...Sprow...Canna...Tik banna...Sandwol...But no sera smee?"
"Of course you can. We would love for you to join us."

I didn't like it! I never did. I was still taken aback by quake 2 (for action) and Unreal (for environments and tension). Half life was a bit pants for me...

Half life 2, however, was absolutely fantastic, even if the weapons couldn't hit anything outside of touching distance.

Half-Life and Doom must never be directy compared, although I liked HL1, there were numerous elements that detracted from the experience adversely for example, the overuse of crates, the parasitic enemies i.e. those small leech things and the head crabs, very little happening at times and the jumping puzzles...

But that aside, the AI even by today's standards is mightily impressive indeed, my point though is that HL1 throughout has its good bits and its bad bits and so in my opinion I can't say its a brilliant game or a bad game nor is it average...

Its one of those games that you'd need to be in around about the right mood for...

A strange leap of logic if I ever saw one.

Depends on your definition of a gamer.

I still enjoy a bash at quite a few games, the just mostly predate half-life. This mainly concerns single player, there's still a few MP games coming out I like. The one big exception was Return to Castle Wolf.

I just don't spend all waking hours playing the most graphically outstanding game available on my computer built just for that purpose. If that's what a gamer is.

Oh, and on the Serious Sam note, it came close. The Co-Op multiplayer's mental if you get enough people in it.

Aye, to put it in a more eloquent set of words about the bosses, eight of my friends and myself brought a new meaning to the word, owned (rapage perhaps??)

Lets just say the bug boss in Serious Sam: Second Encounter didn't even get to recharge once!!

Hated half-life 1 from the beginning. Overly scripted.

Anyway, you can still be a gamer regardless of how old that games you play are.
