go to local shops/ restraunts and ask if they have any jobs going, quite often they will give you an application form. If you go to enough some will accept you and then you pick the one you like best

I've forgotten the stats, but something like two thirds of all jobs are given to someone rather than advertised.

If you find somewhere you want to work, but the people you'd be working with, or the HR department (or both) give them your CV and a nice covering letter syaing why they shoudl get you

you'll get an interview before they advertise it, as advertising jobs isn't cheap.

thats more true for decent jobs rather than part time.

as a student, look to the uni, union has jobs, do you have a widening participation deparmtent or similar?

Yeah i can quite believe that about recruiting more people on spec rather than through advertising. I think my company has only advertised for a job once and that was for a specific reason. A guy from one of our suppliers gave us his CV and we wanted to hire him but new his current employer would be a bit miffed, so we advertised for a day in the local paper, that way we could just say he was replying to an add.

I think everyone that works in the company now has had some other connection to us before being employed full time. My uncle is the MD....
