    Style or substance

Well I have been having many arguments, repeatedly with my good friend, Shmee150 over style or substance.
I am very much a substance person myself, i dont care much about brand names I look at the overall product and see if its the best value for money.

    Examples are -
would you buy a medion laptop from aldi which has kickass specs but lacks a badge and perhaps quality of the case, even if it does come with a 3yr warranty.
Or do you buy say,.... a sony Vaio which will cost maybe 400 pounds more for similar spec but you get the "sony" Badge.

    Another one is cars.
Would you buy a fully loaded car from a manufacturer such as Ford, Vauxhall, Honda, Toyota OR Would you go for the piddly engined poverty spec car from say Bavarian Motor Works or Mercedes Benz or Even Audi (we know they aer fancy VW's )

depends. some things i'm fussy about, some i'm not.

Laptops i don't mind as long as the spec is right (inbcluding weight and battery life, something they don't list very often)

Cars on the other hand..... I own a Golf and lust after just about any Audi out there, they can do no wrong in my book Would have one of them over a BMW or Merc any day....

(never owned an Audi, but my dad has had two and they are cracking cars)

with someting like a laptop band is slightly more important due to the quality of the screen used and the overall build quality of the casing also someone like sony is more likely 2 use a better quality memory and motherboard.

    Mercedes Benz != quality. Lol.

And a Vaio will cost a lot more than £400 more than a laptop from Aldi

I think I'll probably go for a happy, not-too-expensive medium in between to be honest

Arent these Aldi/Netto/Lidl Pcs usually built of very high quality components?

I think the following: (As is obvious from the fact that this discussion comes from me and khizman )

This particular discussion comes from the £900 Medion laptop at Aldi: http://www.aldi.co.uk/special_buys/product_431.html

Vs a similar Sony FS series; the FS315S http://vaio.sony-europe.com/view/Sho...y=VN+FS+Series

Basically the same spec, except sony is thinner and lighter, has the badge, but has slightly fewer extra gizmos like finger-print reader and freebie mouse. The Sony actually has a slightly faster CPU also; 1.86 vs 1.73.

I would pay the £100 extra for the Sony, which would you choose?

I admit with Aldi you get a very good deal for the price, but before now I've owned 2 Acer laptops; each pretty cheap for the spec, and they've both been useless. Since then I've had 2 Toshibas and a Sony and neither of them have ever had a problem making the extra worth it. I think the Medion laptop would probably get a lot of problems quickly and although they do offer a 3yr warranty, I doubt that it will be repaired very quickly, and may well come back from repair not in perfect shape.

i guess i'd go substance... i looked at all the cheaper laptops when buying mine, but came out with a business edition hp laptop as it came with the best specs for under say £900, and it cost £700.
same with cars im thinking, my mate has a skoda felicia, and as a car, its damn good, and comes with a good insurance group, its costing him less for a 1.6 GLXi than my 1.4Si rover.
The car is pretty reliable. no less reliable than any other car infact, it just has a skoda badge on it.

The biggest question is, does the Vaio have an x-black screen?

Don't you mean does the ALDI have the x-black screen, cos the sony definatly does.

I'd take which ever is better, brands don't bother me at all. In the above example I'd take the Sony because of the better screen.

I go with the best specification for things like computers, and of course Jaguar for cars. I would say in general it is substance for me. I own a gamecube and an Xbox, which apparently are less stylish than the PS2 so there you go. Oh, and I play games with awful graphics (Shogun: Total War for example) and prefer them to their newest counterparts.

i love stuff that is well built. i'm not a badge snob, but i do like stuff thats stylish and well made - for instance, i have a shuttle, a griffin powermate, a lovely telly, and a lovely brushed metal hu in my car. in comparison though, i have a crappy car, cheapish clothes and a generally cheapish lifestyle..

I think the point is, you shop around and find something with style and subtance.

One without the other is useless...well, I suppose subsance with no style isn't useless, but you can have both if you choose carefully, so you might as well.

You look around, and find the best combination of the two then... you buy it.

    Its not rocket science.
