Debit card question: What if you need to buy >£300?

For example, I want to buy a pair of 2001FP from Sell, but my Debit card limit is only like £300 a day (just assume I have enough in the accout to pay for it), so how can I buy them? I'm still a student so credit card is probably not a good idea hmm.

Came to UK not too long ago so I'm not familar with the banking system

You can withdraw £300 a day. But I don't think there is any limit regarding to buying items > £300 AS LONG as you have enough in your account.

As TooNice says, the £300 a day limit is for cash withdrawals (and in some cases, foreign currency purchases). You will have a separate credit limit shown on your debit card statements for normal purchases. That's the absolute max you can spend. If you don't spend much regularly then be prepared for the bank to phone you to authorise any unusual purchases.

Also, if you are worried, give them a call beforehand to tell them what you are buying and when. Most banks have a 24-hour customer service number.

^ Ya, thats right. Every time I need to pay my tuition, I end up having to authorise it. But I am pretty sure that you can withdraw any amount you want so long as you have the funds (if you are an oversea student though, you probably won't have any overdraft allowance).

Not wierd at all.. The withdrawal limit is incase someone steals your card... And the phone calls of random spending will be to check that it's you buying it, not someone going on a spending spree on your behalf

Yeah I've spent more than £300 on my debit card successfully. Doesn't happen too often though

I can only withdraw £250 from my account. However you can spend as much as you want on it though.

the cash withdrawl is usually around the £200 - £300 depending on the bank, but this can be changed just by asking them (i have no idea what mine is, i usually just use switch of mastercard)

Spend as much as you like on your card as long as you've got the funds to cover it, mate of mine bought a Porsche on his (lucky git), but as said, they bank will be calling if they see it as an unusual purchase.

I paid the balance of my car on switch. I gave them my old one as deposit then when he said 'how do you want to pay the balance' i gave him the switch card... they swipe it as normal and then the machine makes the salesman pick up the phone and they ask a few security questions...

how much did I do on switch? nearly £12,000 that time...

The Withdrawal limit is £300 per day from the 'hole in the wall' but as the other guys say i dont think their is a limit to spending online, however some retailers may give you a telephone call if it is a large order to make sure it isnt fradulent.

I've never spent (or had) more than £300 from a debit card, but all the literature i've read suggests as everyone has said, that the limit is for withdrawls only.

Well with Credit Cards, your default credit limit (for spending between bill pyments) will be a minimum of £500. Also students get slighty longer to pay these off then adults etc...
