Being British is about driving in a German car
to an Irish pub
for a Belgian beer,
then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry
or a Turkish kebab on the way,
to sit on Swedish furniture
and watch American shows
on a Japanese TV.


And the most British thing of all?

Suspicion of anything foreign!

I was discussing it the other day with one of my friends, whose parents are indian, but who was born in this country, and considers himself to be a british-indian.

He said something very poignant . . . and it made me think about it for days . . . .

i was NEVER EVEEEEEEEEER in to poetry until my english teacher (many moons ago or 3 years in effect) showed me this, im still not a big fan but him and a couple of other war poets really give meaning to what they write and that poem is amazing when you analyse it

Die defending Britian yes, or British interests abroad, but I certainly wouldnt go fight in some war built on lies.

Then you shall never die in battle.

I mean really, how can you justify killing somone if their views are just miss guided, if their been cohurst into fighting.

I was the same, although it's more like a dozen years ago in my case. Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon opened my eyes to a whole new world of literature (I was a sci-fi/fantasy addict) and also made me understand why my granddad never ever talked about the war except with those who'd been there.
