What Skills are needed to get a Webdesigning job?

Right,I want to become a WebDesigner but i don't know all the skills you need so i rang up my local College and asked them what Evening courses they do and the costs this is the reply o got back-

For the Creative Web Design Advanced you would obtain an OCNCE units at Level 2/3, course cost £62.00 with a registration fee of £8.00. We also do Creative Web Page Design including Flash Multimedia of a Tuesday evening for 15 weeks at the same costs.

That Sounds okish to me because i could possably claim back the money with my age,But OCNCE? That any good?

You're talking about web DESIGN so a portfolio of your work, a couple of years experience and a qualification or two should do the trick

    Never heard of OCNCE either.

    Q. What Skills are needed to get a Webdesigning job?

    A. Photoshop and dreamweaver, hand coding HTML, CSS and a good eye.

I am not one, but the ones i've worked with have the above skills.

i just got a job in webdesign.
i have no qualifications in webdesign, i just showed them work i have done, gave them examples of my code and i got a job.
Im now learning asp instead of my previous php knowledge, and ive been working there just over a month... its going well.

but as i say, i have no "qualifiations" although if you want to get into the business i would HIGHLY recommend learning an active server script (asp, php - alot of companies need asp.net developers). without previous coding skills your clutching at straws, (dont count html, every man and his dog can pick it up or learn it in 5 mins)

He wants to be a designer though, not a developer.

A good portfolio of websites that people can actually visit and browse would be a big priority in my opinion, You'd have to be proficient in Photoshop/Dreamweaver, and any coding skills like HTML, ASP, PHP and Flash aswell and have a good eye for design and navigation.

The exact skillset depends on where you want to work tbh.

Some companies have "pure" web designers that will never touch code unless its perhaps flash or javascript. These are the guys who perhaps don't know much about software development but can make anything look great and know about accessability, colours, fonts, layout etc..
They then have web developers who write the software, a job which I do, they are software developers and do not need to know anything about making things pretty. They may create the html templates for the pages but these will be gone over by the web designers to ensure the look is right or maybe just add the correct CSS class/id attributes and then style via stylesheet.

Smaller companies or somewhere where you are in a small department without web designers might require you to have a mix of both of these skills but its hard to be very good at both. I've been in that position too but I am a software developer and while I am comptetent at XHTML/CSS, actionscript and even photoshop anything I produce would look much less attractive than if it had been worked on by a web designer.
