El Reg: Man eats 50-year-old chicken for golden wedding anniversary

A sentimental husband in Denton, Greater Manchester, has celebrated his golden wedding anniversary by eating a 50-year-old can of chicken.

Les Lailey had been saving the tin of Buxted Whole Cooked Chicken in Jelly from a buffet he and his bride Beryl received as a wedding gift – in 1956. They kept hold of the tin through numerous house moves, explaining to the BBC: “I always said 'on my 50th wedding anniversary I'm going to eat that chicken' – so I did.”

rather him than me in all honesty - I will not eat anything a day past the date pasted on tins, packs etc.

In theory - if it was sealed perfectly and wasn't broken it should be fine, but 50 years..... hmmm I'll pass on that one I'm afraid.

someone should send him some imodium (perfect sponsorship deal there - I ate a 50 year old chicken and survived with imodium blazed across his t-shirt )

My wife's aunt dug some absolutely ancient bottles of booze out of a cupboard the other day and offloaded them on me (knowing that the booty from my last booze cruise had run out). I reckon they were at least 20 years old, quite possibly more. The bottle of sweet Vermouth was still spot on, as was the screwtop bottle of scrumpy, but the Pink Lady perry I tipped down the sink after one glass. Two out of three ain't bad.

That's good odds - I opend a bottle of port that was 5 years old and it was fine, but the half bottle from a month a go had turned to paint stripper.
