Google directions arn't too hot doing anything. It'll never travel 1 mile away from the destination to pick up a big road that leads stright to it.

TomTom never actually takes any notice if you select "ignore motorways" on a major trip that needs motorways
It does, however, take you on some STRANGE detours if you select an alternate route/get lost, or just in general. I've been directed down the stupidest of single track dirt roads, when there's a perfectly good B road nearby
