    All Just Culture?

I was over on the BBC website wandering about when I found this story. Honour killings. Seeing all this brought some definite questions to mind, then, following a related link brought even more.

One question I've pondered about Islam is whether or not it is only the influence of Christianity, and Judeo-Christian based ideals that creates and/or sustains 'moderate' Islam? Everywhere Islam gets to rule the situations are appauling. Only in the 'Christian' west is Islam 'moderate'.

I think one of the comments posted later sums up a pertinent point, "If a father can murder his own daughter in a frenzied attack because she took a Christian lover and turned her back on her religion and culture, how can the rest of the world be expected to get along?"

Right then, anyone have some flame retardant undies I can borrow?

this is a really interesting point mate, and the cases of both men need to be treated carefully.
their culture says that this is right for them to do, but they should realise that their existing perception of what is acceptable should change when they live in a country where it is unnacceptable.
my boss is indian, and he dissowned his son for getting with a white girl. he said he did it because his son was going against his wishes and getting involved with people outside their culture. apparently, this is a common thing for indian fathers to do if their son gets with a white girl. this is fair enough, but then again, we live in a multu-cultural society now, and we accept many different cultures all co-existing and merging. dissowning or killing for going outside the rules of a certain culture is in no way acceptable in modern-day britain.

if war is the answer, then we are asking the wrong question

Erm, personally, I don't think 'honour killings' are acceptable no matter what culture you're from. To kill someone because they dated or married someone you didn't approve of, or just did something bringing 'dishonour', is wrong wherever you are this planet.

If this is a vital part of some culture, then that is a twisted and sick culture.
