    Konfabulator 2,
Google Desktop (you get a side bar with that).

www.themexp.org is full of free themes, a lot are packed with adware though.. so it's usually best to unpack it on a virtual machine.

Samurize is another program you should look into, will allow you to run different applets on your desktop.

It's all about Konfabulator. Don't touch Google Desktop unless you want all your information kept!

Yeah, what's the deal with that? I take it you mean the YZ Dock? I heard they were trying to ban it and it got removed from everywhere a while back, but now it's back on download sites like MajorGeeks and so on, so did Apple actually manage to do anything legally?

Another good desktop app is from www.kwidgets.com , someone posted about it here and I use it on my work PC all the time now.

Indeed - was shocked a while back at GD remebering some confidential stuff I had tried to completely obliterate.

Konfabulator - it's better and there are more docklets now that Yahoo bought it, but just eats memory (at least last time I used it)

Google Desktop is pretty safe, you guys are just paranoid. But you can disable 'advanced features' if you want, that stops sending anonymous data to Google.
