Food Industry is changing at last...

Great news I think! :D

Asda have taken Sunny D off the shelves due to a huge drop in sales.
Carbonated drink sales generally have also dropped, while drinking yoghurts, juices and water sales have risen hugely.
I was "people watching" a while ago, and there a bunch of school children sitting outside having all been into the local shop to buy drinks, and they were nearly all drinking fruit juice or water. I didn't see one can of carbonated drink....

People are also becoming far more aware of high salt levels, and despite Heinz reducing the salt in their beans by 30%, they haven't received one complaint. The less salt you eat, the less you feel the need to add it to food.

At long last... the food industry looks as though it is moving in the right direction :)

It's a sad fact that I'll probably drink coke until they find out it gives you cancer or something. Have switched to diet though - and do drink loads more fruit juice and such these days. (don't drink coffee so need another source of caffeine!)

Of course diet coke rots your teeth as fast as fat coke :p and the sugar substitutes are hardly healthy either :rolleyes:

I figure if I'm still drinking beer then there's no need to give up the bad soft stuff ;)

Come to think of it I haven't seen a Sunny D-sh1te advert on the telly for ages. I hope they end up not being able to sell the crappy chemical laden filth altogether, just because I despise them so much for claiming that it's "great stuff" for kids.

Next, I want the utterly contemptible adverts for Cheerios, Shredded Wheat and all the other crappy Nestle cereal brands banned on the grounds of their utter offensiveness to common decency. They contain whole grains do they? And "scientists say that they may contribute to a healthy heart" eh? Whoopdy-****ing-do. Judith Chalmers told me that eating overpriced, rubbish tasting processed cereal products may contribute to my having a healthy heart, so lets go out and support a company that for 30 years has continued to make money selling baby formula to poor nations, killing their babies in the process.

Was wondering about SunnyD the other day whilst in Tesco when I noticed there wasn't any in the orange juice bit. Haven't drank that in chuffing aaaaaaaaaaaaaages, my teeth are still recovering.

Aye, I really like innocent smoothies at the momeny, but damn they are expensive!


... Just need to cut down on McDonalds now... twice a week can't be too good.

Never forget that supermarkets are the enemy. The latest thing to get on my wick is the sudden proliferation, post Jamie's School Dinners, of 'active kids' and 'five-a-day' branding on pre-packed vegetables (which are a rip-off compared to the loose stuff anyway). Yes Mr Sainsbury, vegetables are in theory good for you, but in practice some/most of your stuff is mushy intensively grown pap from a poly-tunnel in Almeria, grown with plenty of cheap north-African immigrant quasi-slave labour, and containing a fraction of the nutrients of traditionally grown veg. You counter-revolutionary capitalist pigdog.

They have no choice but to act and save their own necks.

Supermarkets are still terrible places, with their kenyan veg and their unhung meat. If I could afford it I would shop with those people who send you food boxes, but I can't. Waitrose do nice meet though.

Surely the whole point is that these sweeteners are intensely sweet, so are used in such tiny tiny quantities that they contain ~zero joules of energy. How can they make you fat, then?

Indeed... we've started getting all our meat and eggs from the local farm shop, and organic veg delivered every week. It's MUCH nicer than supermarket stuff, and the meat is local and generally cheaper too :) Can't go wrong!!

agreed. however, personally prefer my food to be natural rather than engineered - know what I'm dealing with. Nothing wrong with sugar, as long as one uses it up.

I cut back on my salt intake when I first met Sair as she nearly died when she saw how much I used to cook with.

You can't go without salt....it's essential to life, but when you read what's on the box of , lets say, a frozen pie, you realise that just one slice gives you all the salt you need for that wohle day!!! Forget the Walkers crisps ;)

Sunny D made me giggle for years, cos watching a calm child turn into a wall paper chewing monster after a large glass, watching the hyper active monsters in supermarkets, was entertaining.

But long term, we have a problem here in the UK, siumilar to the US. Luckily we generally DO seem to be sorting it out! :)

The trouble is when they take the sugar and salt out of something like baked beans they replace the sugar with scaccrine (sp?) sweetners... :confused: wtf. Why do you need sugar and salt in baked beans anyway...

My cousins kids used to go mental after drinking squash and stuff with e numbers in, with proper food they are as good as gold.

Schmunk, not all cans of beans tatse the same you know. The low sugar/low salt beans by mom has bought in the past taste of vile saccharine. Its not just beans theres way too much salt in everything- in an attempt to disguise the tatse of processed food no doubt.

i don't cook with salt, except for some fish. it's not killed me yet (and zak/sair have had my food, which is prepared without any added salt)

I've cut down on my artificial sweetners for at least 10 years as they always give me headaches.

Is there any issue with using too much vinegar ? I seem to like to swamp my chips in vinegar.

It is amazing that adults still let their children consume all sorts of crap and then wander why they suffer from "attention deficit syndrome" and other behaviour problems.

I don't use salt in any cooking and the only thing I might use it on are chips if I ever eat them. I think vinegar is supposed to be quite good for you but I wouldn't recommend drinking the liquid left over from the pickled onion jar!! It's one of those substances like honey that has 1001 uses.

Sunny D (hate the name) was only drunk due to the commercials thrown at people, if you looked at the label it contains allsorts of sh1te, can't believe people will choose that over proper orange juice for the same price.

I drank some sunnyD once, tasted like oil to me...

I take it you can prove your allegations?

Not forgetting that I worked for JS for five years and I KNOW where a lot of their veg comes from.

I'll just sit here and wait for real proof... so no links to some mad git's website making outrageous claims of baby strangling to increase crop yeilds, show me some proof from a recognised and respected source.

Oh, and nutritional comparisons would be good too, though I think you need to qualify what 'traditionaly grown' veg is, perhaps? (And saying its 'veg grown in the traditional way' isn't good enough, sorry) What traditional way is that?

And while you're on, I'd also be interested in seeing evidence of JS undermining communist ideals too... and perhaps you can supply evidence of all your income being donated to worthy causes, cos, after all, you're not playing the capitalist game, eh? ;)

I feel sorry for farmers really. All this competition between Asda et al means that the grocers are trying to cut prices left, right and centre. Usually its the buy price which is the one reduced, not the % markup :)

Anyway while we are on about milk - Full fat is only about 4% fat iirc, so why do people look at me as if I'm eating a LARD sandwich with a sugar coating and all go " oooooh..... full fat milk" when I want a nice lovely drink.

4% is a low figure folks regarding fat content, I'm sure that slimfast bar that the same people seem to worship probably has more fat in.

Aspartame *is* carcinogenic. What bugs me is that they put it in non-diet drinks too (it must be cheaper than sugar then).

The problem with eating or drink healthy stuff (processed) is that they charge too much.
Why does orange juice cost a bomb when you buy it in a small amount, the gits.

I was going to "let it lie", but I'm afraid that the the soapbox is coming out :eek:

The real enemy is not heartless multinational food companies, evil retailers or even the government, oh no, it is joe public..... yes you and me, the bloke walking his dog across the street, even the girl next door. All of us buy food and then eat it.

Where do we buy it? From a retailer usually because we're too busy to grow our own or not organised enough to find other alternative sources.

Who makes it? Food companies of course, and what do they make..... food that sells well, because thats the only way they can make money. Why does it sell well? because we buy it!!

And who legislates what we should have in our food? The government of course. So who elects them? Guess what we do. Why do they legislate? to appease us and make them voteworthy.

Now does anyone here spot a pattern?

Could it be that we have a certain amount of control over what we eat, what goes in it and where we buy from? Before we start throwing rocks we should look in the mirror first and ask ourselves whether we are trying to avoid the consequences of our own actions by blaming someone else?

Rant over, soapbox put away. But be warned I shall be back tomorrow to pontificate some more :p

The only time that starts to break down is when people are misslead by lack of knowledge, a brand of chrisps marketed as 'healthy' (i think they were called light or something) fooled a friend of mine, because she didn't understand about saturated fat.

Now who's responsible, the government for not educating the public well enough, which is blissfully ignorant of the problems? So the public re-elects them?
