    Spam is breeding like rabits..

I've always had a bit of spam in my spam box for some reason, never given my email out in public, but for the last few days the odd one or two has been reaching my inbox - so I just mark it as spam and move on... but, in the last 10 minutes I've received about 5 in my inbox.

I don't mind it that much as long as it goes straight into my damn spam box and not inbox.

I'm using Gmail so I guess there isn't much I can do about it apart from sign up with a new email address (which I really don't want to do).

Spam box has caught about 170 odd emails within the last few days though..

Sometimes I wonder if the people I email might have compromised windows boxes leaking my address to spammers. The best way to prove this would be to set up another email address and never email anyone with it and see if it still gets spam. Alas, I can't be bothered to put that kind of effort into it.

I've had a couple of companies sell my email address in the past, then flat out deny it to me (even though I've specifically created it for that company, and not used it anywhere else), the other thing is you get are spam robots that look through domains and randomly start emailing randomname@domain until it finds a hit..

What's most irksome is when they guess your main email account.. :/

Just got another one reading this thread.
I guess we could come up with lots of ideas of how they get our address... best not to think too much about it though else you'll get paranoid.

I was thinking there would be a bot that would search through domains - I don't use a complicated address, it's just my name so yeah.. probablly guessable after lots of tries.

Oh, and this is my main account >_<

having customisable filters for email is a godsend, particularly if you download filtersets.

My main account (NTL) gets a fair bit of spam, but a combination of NTL's spam filter, and Outlook 2003's junk mail filter means I get almost none in my inbox. I'm not fussed about it otherwise. We use a third party spam/virus filtering service at work. Spam is a way of life

Definitely agree with you - I've already had some set up for certain email.

I usually get a couple of hundred a day, but then again I have been using this email address for about 5 years, and have posted it around a few places at the start. Still, it redirects to a gmail account now, so that catches all but 2 or 3 spams a day, with virtually no false positives (and those ones are always from companies whose mailing lists i subscribed to anyway - never any personal ones)

I found this and it appears to work for Gmail too.

    Blue Frog

Works for Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail (or your own domain if you have one).

    Also works IN firefox

Only just got it, but it seems like a lot of people have gone for it, it's been features on Download.com etc, so it all seems safe too.

Edit: This explains how it works too: http://www.bluesecurity.com/solution...h_tutorial.asp

I thought I'd give that a try XA04. I see the option "run only while idle" - what exactly does it do when idle? Does it just constantly bombard spam sites with requests to stop spamming?

The 'run only while idle' means Blue Frog will only run when your computer is idle... e.g. if you are on a game, the game with have priority over Blue Frog and so Blue Frog won't run - but if your not using your computer for anything then it will run.

Best to not tick the box as it won't be doing any work whilst your playing games and such anyway - only when you physically open your browser up to check your email.

Ah right - I see now. Just got confused since I don't use a browser. I installed the thunderbird extension instead. Just select the mail that's junk and click the report button .
