    Differences in LANs and Modems

Hi, I have a question I'm trying to help answer for a friends son who is new to networks.

    Question asks:

Give examples and explain the differences of protocols used for modems and LANs such as v90, ISDN, ADSL, RS-232, Net-Bui, USB, IrDa, Bluetooth.
I have an idea in mind of how to answer this but also wouldn't like to misadvise as I'm not too hot on networks etc. Cheers.

Try google wikpediai and enter both those in a search. It will provide much more assistance than could be written here.

See I understand that modems use protocols such as V90, V92 etc and Lans use others but where does bluetooth and IrDa come into it? Those are not really modems or LANs to be honest.

bluetooth and irda are usually used to communicate with mobile devices, such as mobiles/pdas. Bluetooth does create a sprt of local area network - similar to the idea of wireless (802.11g) but without the fixed centre - ie a modem/router or server - it connects directly between the two. (ad-hoc connection)
