Yeah we don't necessarily read the word as a whole, more the minimal unit of sound (phoneme) in relation to the minimal unit of meaning (morpheme). The phoneme's tend (in general terms) to be syllabic in nature. As 'of' doesn't contribute greatly to meaning and is also a light syllable in that sentence the brain misses them out :)

In its very broadest and non-technical terms :)

I've seen those before - funny how the first time I counted the "f" in the last "of" but not the previous two.

The f in "of" sounds like a v.
