"Chav" Phenomena

It has only been in the last maybe 2 years that this word has had universal meaning - i believe it comes from the kent/essex name for romanies (hah - in that area they can talk <zips up flameproff suit>). I personally don't like the word as it doesn't stirke a cord with me!

These young people have been around for ever though - what did you know them as? When I was a kid down Chichester way we used:

Kevins (abbv. Kevs)
Trevors (abbv. Trevs)
Pikeys
Casuals

These terms make me smile fondly in a sort of hazy 30something harking back to my yuf way...and it got me thinking (in that friday afternoon way)....in those days it was:

Burberry = Fosters
Baseball Cap = Campri Ski Jacket
Scooter = 50cc trail bike
ANy Pimped Car = Ubiquitous XR3i....

Anyone care to add to the list?

Townies, Scallies, NEDs

Eclipse and NAFF co jackets were standard townie fare in the early 90s :)

i think chav must actually be a 20th-century term - i remember watching snatch in 2000 and thinking 'oh thats what a chav really is'

scoomers - the type of people from the 'molscoomb' estate (rough area round here)

As herbert_goon said, and he is correct, the term 'chav' originates from the Thames estuary - particularly the Medway towns. It is only *very* recently it has come into the common parlance countrywide.

What really annoy's me is their nasal whiny way they speak and the way they think they can pester people into giving them money, cigarettes etc.

Actually the similarity's end there, i have a decent dress sense (at least i hope so) and i certainly haven't been heard saying "innit" lately. Anyway round york way i remember chav's been called ding's as in clifton ding's god only knows why

I always thought it was Council House Vermin :)

I'm sure the label started of in Kent - specifically in the Chatham / Faversham areas. Prior to that I think they where just townies.

For someone to be "chav" (in my opinion anyway) they have to be a nasty little scumbag. You sometimes see nice folk with chavicidal tendancies, but they're different IMHO.

the ones round here are known as Chavs - back at home there usually referred to as "townies"

The term started in the North East, and it was orginally Chava/s, we have been using the term for over 10 years, but for some reason when the media got a hold of it they abriviated it to 'chav'. Of course the rest of the U.K. has had different names such as townie etc.

CHAVS, on mopeds and noisy scrambler bikes... THey've been doing runs of my road ALL DAY! It's doing my head in :'( Especially now I've got my window open it's now 300% louder!

The scrambler bikes are INCREDIBLY noisy and literally ear piercing... What's the point :'( And the mopeds... I swear they've done something to the exhausts to give them a similar tone! They're so slow and pointless and I'm THIS close to laying spike strips and laughing as they come crashing to the ground :( :( :(

Ahh, but you get loads of chav kids too. I was in Bransholme one day (definatley not out of choice) to visit a customer, and I stopped to let three kids about 5 years old cross the road.

The little s**ts walked across while frowning at me and giving me the finger. I could have ran over the scumbags!

They're parents are just as bad and couldn't care less about what their kids (no doubt byproducts from a one night stand) are up to.

I saw them with their trousers tucked into their socks whilst visiting Liverpool about '94, just remembered that. At the time i wondered wtf they were doing but now i realise...didnt realise chavs were around that far back.

not sure how international the chav thing is, but last weekend after having had a few lunchtime beers watching the Arse v Tott game I went off to a cashpoint reached after turning a blind corner, to get a big shock seeing about 15-20 youths all burberryed up blocking everyone's way.
With beer bravery and sheer amusement at seeing such a bunch of clownish clones, I pushed past the 6 chavs who were trying to stop me using the cashpoint. And then I heard them yapping - they were all German!
Then I noticed that they were actually "posh chavs" and really weren't the slightest bit intimidating at all - even the cowardly pack bravery didn't impress me.
I probably shouldn't have laughed at them though.
