Might interest some. Bisley (home of rifle shooting) is having one of its open days next Saturday. Lots to try, ranging from laser clay shooting to military sniper rifles and black powder pistols.
Info HERE Its aimed at people who haven't shot before, as well as those looking at trying different disciplines. All shooting is carried out with fully trained range officers.

I go there occasionally - it's a great place.
In July I'll be there for the Ashburton tournament.
What discipline is that evil? All my shootings out in the coutryside, havent shot at a range so am looking forward to Bisley. Have been pondering joining a target club, fancy getting a .303 on my ticket :)
I used to shoot 7.62 Match rifle there back in the early 90's :)
Cadets or as a civy? Have been looking in to shooting F-Class, service rifles seem to be a cheap way in to long range shooting. Have seen some suprisingly cheap rifles for sale recently, 7.62 match rifle for under £250.Quote:

With the CCF - it was on the Shorts range IIRC - would love to have short over more than 300m though !

They do teo of these open days a year, will have a look to see what distances they shoot at.
Easiest way to get in to target shooting is through a club, normally six month probation where they show you the ropes (using club guns), then apply for a firearms certificate. As long as theres a qualified person with you, you can shoot any calibre. Clubs are queit cheap to join (ones i looked at £80ish year), and you can often rent space in the armoury. Most clubs have .22 ranges 100 yard, many have pistol calibre ranges (underlever carbines), but most rent time on a big range for larger stuf. In the south most clubs use Bisley, have 1200 yard range there. Rifles are also rather cheap, martini target rifle can be got for around £100 2nd hand, a new semi auto marlin for gallery rifle is around £220. Ammo is also cheap
I fancy a go at F-Class, really want to shoot an L97 :) Couple of blokes on a shooting forum are running that side of things on Saturday.
Tumble's a bit of a rifle man.....good shot too, judging by his results. Closer range, super accuracy stuff I think.

I have also fired (cant remember the brand) a .22 converted from a .303 rifle when in the (ATC) Air Training Corps.
And a cut down version of the british army SA80 called the L98 which doesnt have the benefit of being Automatic and doesnt have a scope, which fires the standard NATO round of 5.56mm

we had a rifle range at school, occasionally went for a blast. admittedly a .22 is hardly gonna pierce more than the target
.22 well i suppose it depends on if were talking .22 air rifle or .22 live ammunition rifle... i was once told the round could travel for 2 miles,, sounds fairly powerful to me,, however i was young and highly suggestible... so you might be right
.22 comes in a variety of flavours. The standard .22LR can be had in subsonic or supersonic, both have the ability to travel a couple of miles. Israel and Russia both make .22 sniper rifles for 100m sniping. Couple of blokes on airgunbbs have shot out to 220yards on a windless day with these, just using a lot of holdover. Its also the only calibre that can be got in semi automatic in the UK (other than shotguns), which adds to the fun. You can also get HV tracer in .22, must get some to play with at night.Quote:

The most fun I've had was using a version of the SA80 converted to fire .22 LR on a 25 Yard range - 3 round burts with no recoil at al where fun :)
This does look interesting. I remember having a go at .22 rifle shooting years and years ago (just the once), and really enjoyed it.

One of my mates is getting married in a while, and I'm the best man, so I'm thinking about fun things to do for the stag do (apart from the obvious). I'd like to organise a day shooting a range of weapons, especially WW2 era stuff. Any ideas where that can be done, and how much it might cost?

If your after WW2 stuff your options are very limited due to civillian ownerhip of pistols, semi autos (over .22) and full autos being banned. Some people do shoot in Europe, that opens up pistols and possibly semi auto rifles. In the UK were are restricted to shotguns (including high mag capacity solid slugs on an FAC), single shot and magazine fed (manual loading) rifles and semi automatics in .22. But there is no restriction on calibre in the UK, so you can own a .50 calibre sniper rifle as long as plod thinks you are up to it and you have access to a range big enough. Theres also muzzle loading pistols, but these can be revolvers as you load each cyliner with powder , path and bullet.
Shot in the army match rifle short (300-600) match on century range and long (900-1000) match on stickleback in '89. Was a laugh. Picked up the rifle for the first time in my life on the morning of the match. I was doing the machine gun match on the saturday when the practice was taking place. My mate showed me how to drive the gantry sight and off we went. Scored a 45 at 1000 but cocked up at 900 cuz I was out with my sights at the start of the match (missing practice caught up with me) and only got a 27. A 45 at 900 would have given me the tyro bronze. Which would have been funny :lol:Quote:

Mart, hate to p*ss on your parade mate but only certain ranges allow the use of the rifle (SA80) on full auto. Normally field firing ranges. But in case you do miss out take it from me....it is a giggle :D

The biggest problem with it was the plastic bits. They either broke or the ejection opening cover would slash your knuckles when you cocked the weapon. Not serious but bloody irritating. Mind you it's been modded to hell and back since I had my hands on it. Still not managed to mod it into an M16 yet though which would have been a better idea. Or the new H&K that they've been looking at. Not sure how that performs but on past record H&K make very good tools.
I am a member of a gun club, i havent shot there for about 2 years though.
I Miss shooting, when i get my car on the road, im gonna go more often.
I remember when i once went to bisley, they called off the whole day shooting, due to princess dianna dying (it happened that day) both me and my dad int he car were listening to the radio thinking it was some sick joke.

Ah Bisley. Tomorrow it is now... I was once part of an ATC squadron that had a Bisley team. It was great, shooting an L81 at 600metres. Bloody big targets they had to use though.

Shot both of these over 300yards and managed a couple of bulls :) Am now looking at joining a club that specialises in military sniper rifles. Will see if I got any good pics later.
I think the rifle we used for the target rifle long and short range was the No 8. It's a long time ago (1989) so I may be mistaken. Made a pleasant change from the kind of shooting I was used to though. All very relaxed. Unlike the parachute regiment cup. Leg it a mile and a half with all your gear against the clock and then shoot. After the mile and a half I think the first range was for rifles was 400m, 5 or 600 for the machine gun group, but you had to run from the 600m point and if you didn't get there in time the targets went down. My overiding memory of that particular cup (on century range) was a grass snake slithering out from under my mate's feet as we ran between firing points. Which made him jump a bit. Then after all that when he got to the next point he found that his magazine had come off of his weapon so he had no ammunition to continue the shoot either!
the no. 8 was the standard .22 rifle IIRC :)

Ahhhh forgot you were at Tonbridge Scchool, im a local to you lot. I even swam in your rather nice swimming pool when I was a lad ;) Just talked to a bloke about shooting 7.62 sniper rifles, club is a wapping £10 a year join, have t pay range fees at Bisley though :) Am very tempted, have an urge to get another rifle for the cabinet. Last year we visited. Went on a guided tour of the machine shop floor, led by the boss then upstairs to have a look at their fully assembled rifles, inlcuding a fleeting moment of fantasy looking down the scope of a sniper. iirc they only actually make the actions there, then buy in barrels/stocks and assemble.Quote:

Hmmm..if the No 8 is a .22 then it wasn't that. This was a 7.62 (unless there are large and small bore versions). I genarally knew it as the 'target rifle' as it wasn't usual equipment for me. As i said, it was 1989 so I'm digging out ancient history here.
Had a twin aperture sight set up. So both fore and rear sights were aperture. Line the discs up and fire. Find the fall of shot and adjust your sights. Always aim centrally to the target. Was a 9 ft screen with a 2 ft bull with an inner 'v-bull'. Good hitting a bull at 1000m. Even better hitting a v-bull.

I think I know the Match Rfile you are referring to - it was a bit of a beast in the recoil stakes ! but I can't find any info on it :(
Yep, No.8s are .22 - we use them on our small bore range at school. No full bore permitted - in the words of the coach, "It'd go through the end of the range and kill someone in the car park!".
I always find the recoil something hard to get used to. Having shot small bore, 22, all last term, I recently fired my first 7.62 of the season. Boy, do you need to hold that thing tight to stop it flying all over the place. I only got a modest 90/100, which was was none too pleased with.
