    Astigmatism - Anyone else?

I had been getting these headaches that i used to get as a kid recently (well more like the last 18 months) and never even thought that it could be my eyesight, so anyway, it got to the point where my right eye doesnt focus properly, and i only noticed it by accident when i was rubbing the good eye and looking out of the duff one and couldnt see clearly!. so i went for an eye test and the optician said i have Astigmatism in both eyes, but one is worse than the other. she went on to explain that people with Astigmatism are born with it and it is the lens of the eye that is shaped like a rugby ball instead of being round. i understood that bit, but what i didnt understand was, if i have always had it, how come my eyesight has never suffered before?. she said it was something to do with the way the brain interprets the signals from the optic nerve, and as you get older this changes and you lose the ability to focus properly. it kind of makes sense, but i was wondering if anyone else has this and if they know about the brain part of it. ive had a look on google, and i found plenty about Astigmatism, but nothing about the brain part of it.

oh and who the arsing hell makes up the prices for specs? robbing sods its cost me 150 quid for a pair of jack Duckworths and a pair of ones with no rims. bah humbug. just need a plaster for the corner now.

I have it too... its nothing disasterous but it can bring on headaches through eyestrain.

Specs are expensive anyways, so I keep my for only when I get a headache or when I'm driving at night...

And berfore anyone kicks off, no, I don't have to wear them to drive... I can see at least two or three feet in front of the bonnet, and with ABS, that's enough!

Yea, I got Astigmatism 2.5 on my left eye and 1.5 on my right eye. (And also short sight of -6.25 both eyes. I'm also having extremely poor contrast ratio and have slow focusing speed (rough guess 150ms to focus properly at 35cm)

And it is getting worse I'm only 19 but I'm feeling my vision like early 60s

I need to get new pair of glasses every 9 months and it just sucks. I can't see a thing without my specs. (i.e. to read the serial on a ram chip I need to put it up to 8cm.

I wish the autofocus LCD lenses or whatever it is named come out quickly. I really need them :argh:

I used to have a small astigmatism in both eyes, along with a pretty handy short sight... BUT it's all fixed now thanks to a very rich man with a laser.....

I started getting something similar a few years ago. I've never got it checked out because it barely ever happens but I guess I should.

It all started when I was working over the summer as a junior ICT manager, I was working in an accounts department with extremely poor light, at about 8am in the morning, so I was fairly tired to begin with. An hour or so before lunch my eyesight in my left eye went funny, almost like there was electrical interference (sounds stupid I know but its the only way I can describe it) over the corner of my left eye. It slowly spreads, but I didn't notice it till I "looked" at it (again, sounds stupid). When it gets this bad its hard to focus on things without closing the eye in question. After about an hour or so it goes away, and then a uber-headache, close to migraine, slowly kicks in.

I get this every now and again, and it is always followed with a headache, and I don't think it ever occurs in my left eye. I usually find drinking crap loads of water tends to help. I used to suffer from migraines as a child (which I was given suppositories for, but thats another story ), and do get one every now and again.

Do we think this is the same thing? Its impossible to try and describe to people what its like, I've even looked in the mirror to see if its something on my eye when it occurs, or if my pupils or spacking out or something similar, but I look fine (except ghostly pale, but I'm like that anyway )

I spoke to a guy I work with about it, he used to get something similar, it was caused by the frequency of the lighting he was sitting under or something crazy like that apparently.

My vision is good, I have no problems reading but it doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be, focusing can be a little difficult for me sometimes but it isn't a horrific problem and doesn't come often.

I think a visit to the opticians is in order

tobeman, i too was diagnosed with migranes as a kid, and have always put the headaches down to that. ill soon see when the specs arrive. at the moment, i can pretty much make the headache start just by putting one hand over the good eye and trying to focus with the bad one.

get them tested, only takes about 15 mins

I have in one eye, and I'm short sighted in the other. It's not that bad, although I would benefit from wearing glasses all the time, I usually just don't think about it.

I have an astigmatism in my right eye, as a result my contact lens prescription is bumped up to compensate (torics didn't exist when i started wearing them)

arthur, i feel for you! Mine's only -3.00 and -3.25 and I'm half blind when i don't have any correction. Being short sighted sucks... Might go Tumbles route when I know my prescription hasn't changed for a few years (it's still getting progressively worse)

Tobeman, I get the same thing, but not regularly... I notice that I get blank spots in my vision then the mother of all headaches starts. I still don't know what the trigger is (but i was watching the telly at the time)

It's always good to get your eyes tested regularly especially if you are using a computer a lot of the time. (if you're working, you should be able to claim a free eye test if you work with VDU's for a high proportion of your job) and make sure that the refresh is high enough that you can't see it, I am very sensitive to it and I have to adjust anyones monitor if it is on 60Hz so that I can work with them... It has to be above 75hz but when I get a migraine, i am even sensitive to that!

I stopped using CRT for 10 years, and I don't sit close to my monitor But my short-sight still increasing at a rate of 0.5 pa.

I'm pretty sure mine is due to genetics, coz my whole family line have crap vision.

Lens are getting a lot more expensive.

And stress keep changing my prescription +- 0.5 day in day out so I had to take 3 eye tests to actually get an accurate prescription reading.
